Ich and white spot (term more commonly used in Europe) are names for the same thing - Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, a parasite. The name's too long, so most people shorten it to "ich" or "ick". This isn't the same as marine ich or white spot, which is caused by a different organism, Cryptocaryon irritans, which is a totally different protozoan.

Another common condition which resembles ich is velvet. It also appears as white spots, but heavy infestations of this will have a gold or rust color under bright light.

See diagnosis chart in this link:

You can treat velvet the same as ich - copper based medications - be cautious if there are any copper-sensitive plants or animals in your tank. Some sources recommend reducing/eliminating light to the tank during treatment, as there is debate on the exact classification of the organism causing velvet - some call it a dinoflagellate, others an algae, because it contains chlorophyll.

Treatment should last 14 days, because the medication won't affect encycted indivual organisms. The articles below will give you more info - the first is for ich, the last two are for velvet.
