so...i found a betta I really like and i've been told I can add him (it IS a male) to my 10 gallon community tank.

Right now I have 3 fancy guppies (one male, 2 female), one male platy, one spotted cory, and one clown pleco.

has anyone had success with bettas in a similar tank set up?
please only answer if you have actually done this, i appreciate all the help, but it's one thing to say something and one thing to have actually had experience with it.

Thanks!

My tank is almost exactly like yours. I have a ten gallon with 4 red phantom tetra, 2 neon tetra, 2 angelfish, 1 clown pleco, and 1 BETTA. My betta is doing great in the tank. He is almost scared of the angelfish and he doesn't chase the tetra. In your situation though it could be risky. Many bettas will confuse guppies for other betta. That would be the only risk. If you have another tank that you could put the guppies in then do it before introducing the betta. Let the betta get comfortable with his surroundings and then you could try introducing the guppies to his environment. This process should work. Bettas are fine in community tanks. I don't know why people say that they're just going to kill every other fish. They don't. Make sure that you do have some semi-aggresive fish though before putting a betta in your tank. As long as the betta knows that he can't win then he is fine. Good Luck with your tank.

You can keep one betta with other fish, but not in the conditions that your aquarium has. Bettas can't be kept in community aquariums with fancy-tailed guppies. Sadly, the bright colors of the guppies (and even some platies) remind male bettas of other male bettas, and they can attack these fish.

BUT on the bright side, cory cats and some small shoaling fish like neon tetras or rummy nose tetras can live peacefully with a male betta, as I've encountered from experience. Don't forget to keep the water at optimum condition; and since bettas like soft water with high amounts of humic acid (you can use black water extract or those indian almond leaves), try to find fish that can also live in similar conditions.

My boyfriend has been keeping his betta in a 5 gallon tank with a small school of rummy nose tetras for the past 2 months--they get along fine, and the acidic conditions bring out the redness of the tetras' noses :)

Jeez.. some people. For one, Betas are not Chinese anything. anyway, betas can get along with many kinds of fish. But, unfortunately for you, not fancy guppies. Since fancy guppy males have the flowing, flashy colored tails, the male betas see them as rivals for thier territory and will attack them. The other fish in the tank the beta would probably do fine with (ive had a male in with danios and mollies before) but he will most likely kill your male guppy (maybe the females, too).

Also, unless you wnat to be cleaning it out EVERY day, don't keep the beta in the pet store container, like Gary says. It doesn't need a huge bowl to live ( a cheap vase from WalMart should suffice), but those dinky cups are just wrong.

What works for one betta will not for another. In my experience, they're usually pretty good around other fish... just DON'T and I repeat DON'T put in tiger barbs or (of course) another male betta. Tiger barbs' favorite snack is pretty fishy tails, and that means your betta's and your guppies'.

My suggestion would be to put him in an isolation box type of thing and see how he reacts to the fish swimming by them. If he flares and acts stupid, keep him away. If he just watches them enviously, you could probably let him out into the open. Just don't get any more fish- it sounds like it's getting pretty crowded in there! You might also want to watch your guppies, because the betta might think that they are other male bettas.

Betta+Gourami= extremely undesirable concept. Bettas and Gouramis are very heavily appropriate. putting them in a tank mutually is the comparable as putting your 2 men Bettas mutually. Male Bettas could in no way be stored mutually and men and girls are not plenty extra effectual. I propose keeping apart all of them and development small community tanks around them. the single that is aggressive could be stored on my own, mutually as the others look okay to have tankmates. For the different 2 Bettas you are able to upload fish like Corydoras, Rasboras, Platys, and Danios.

Yes i have done this many many times. The answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT.
You may be asking yourself "this guy is dumb he doesnt know what hes talking about" Trust me i do know what im talking about. You will stress out the betta and all the other fish in your tank. Also you will see your guppies dieng daily and one day you will see them all die.
Now you may be thinking "stress doesnt exist, its just fish store owners way of making money by offering you medicine and a bigger tank" well it is not a fake thing it is real REALLY REAL.
Plus your tank is already quite well stocked for its size. If you want to own a betta keep it in the small container it comes with and dont put it in your tank.
Bettas are not community fish, despite their appearence. Also if you put a betta with another betta you will see they lose their beauty in a matter of minutes. Lol.

bettas can get along with plecs and corys, but do not tend to well with platys and male guppies. the betta doesn't appreciate other fish swimming in his own space, or other colourful fish either. you may get lucky with a chilled out betta, but i wouldn't risk it.

it sounds like your tank is fully stocked anyway, especially with the plec in there (they put out enough waste comparable to 3 guppies heh).

i wouldnt put him in with guppies at all not if you want them in one piece, because of the guppy's tail he will think it is another betta and he will try to eat them. (ive had this happen to me b4) and the platty will chew away at his tail as well , not a good combination. they like to live on their own unless the are breeding . but personaly i would advise against it ..
get him his own takn. doesn't have to be huge.. but he will be alot happier.

i had a beta for 3 years with a cory and pleco. but it didnt do well with the guppies. you shouldnt have anything too small or the beta will kill it. but it should do fine with your pleco and cory.
