What does the "sp" stand for in the scientific name for shrimp... e.g. Bumblebee shrimp = Caridina sp.

I think it stands for "species", as when there might be more than one species which is known under a common name.

But, it might also mean "sport", which connotes a "man-made" species which was bred for sport (like prize pumpkins or poodles).

I'd go with the first answer. I think there's another designation for "sports".
