Don't listen to the advice about 20 fish, unless you get fish that grow to only 1 inch or less. If you get goldfish, just get two fish for instance, since they grow a foot and even 20 gallons is stretching it for them. Mollies are cute and fun and don't grow that fast. -- and even 15 fish (or less if they're big and pretty) is a lot to enjoy when you think about it. If you don't overcrowd, you won't have to clean as much, or flush as many dead fish down the toilet. That will make your tank much nicer than getting "as many fish" as you can.

Rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per gallon, so you can get up to 20 inches of fish. Another consideration would be the aggression factors of the fish. Since you are looking for a community tank I would recommend:
2 Dwarf Gouramis (app. 4.8 inches)
8 Serpe Tetras (app. 14 inches)
Other considerations would be the pH level that each species requires and the type of environment will simulate it's natural habitat. Best Wishes to you

there are a lot of different types of fish. If i were you, i'd go for some small and colourful, a couple of large and always get at least 2 of each kind. Be careful, some of the smaller fish may get eaten by the bigger fish. Try some tetras (they come in about 5 varieties), some scissors tail sharks, and some regular gold fish.
