Well there are 2 reasons. 1st goldfish are rather heavy eaters, and produce large amounts of waste. Most people will tell you you need 5-10 gallons per goldfish. (5 gallons assumes a good filter, and more fequent water changes.) So in a 20 gallon tank 2 goldfish is good, and 4 is pushing it.

2nd goldfish are cold water fish, but most "tropical" are warm water only. There really isn't a good temp for both. This leads to one group being stressed. Which leads to disease. Which gets them all sick...

what other fish? what are the ammonia levels in the tank? how often are your water changes?

goldfish are best in species-only tanks, and a 20 gallon is the minimum tank size for ONE goldfish, so he's best without any tankmates at all.

goldfish put out a LOT of waste, which produces ammonia, usually this is just about kept on top of by the good bacteria in a cycled filter and regular water changes, but other fish added could have pushed this over the edge, any reading on an ammonia test kit over 0 is toxic to fish.

goldfish are poopy fish, they poop alot wich mean they may have been an amonia build up in the tank, have you done your regular water changes. check the Ph also. if you don.t have the test kits, take a water sample to the local fish store and they will check it for you. goldfish don't go well with other fish because they mess up the water so much
