Short. Most octopi only have life spans ranging from 1-2 yrs. Consider that against the price you would have to pay for one.

They're highly intelligent, so you have to keep them occupied. They like "toys" they can play with. They also need a top that can be locked - not stuff stacked on it - locked! And no holes they can squeeze through. They need to have a "species only" tank.

One species, the blue ringed octopus, is venomous: http://www.didyouknow.cd/animals/octopus.htm

If you'd like to read about keeping one from the viewpoint of a keeper and breeder, see this link: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/july2003/invert.htm

DO NOT DO IT. Octopus are very time intensive pet's. The conditions in the tank have to be perfect at all times, and you have to keep them by their selves due to the fact that they will kill almost anything you put in with them.

The worst thing about them though is that they are very smart, and if they get board they will tear the tank up looking for something to do. That is when their not trying to escape which they do on a regular basis. You basically have to seal the tank to keep them in because they can squeeze through any hole that is larger than their beak, no matter how large their body appears.

Good Luck.

not bad it needs it's own tank and you have to feed it live food. every day you need to know the basics of taking care of a marine tank so you should get a book on that.

Believe it or not, octopuses (octopi?) are escape artists. You have to cover your tank securely or those guys will literally climb out.
