Fish - December 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

All my fish are tropical.
I've seen in the pet shops where sometimes they give them slices of Oranges.
My question which I forgot to ask at the Pet shop is.
Is it OK to put a piece of Fresh Fruit or a piece of Raw Cellery or lettuce leaf in the tank as long as its rinsed clean with water?
And not left in the tank longer than 24 hrs?

I got 5 tiny goldfish from walmart for 28 cents and 3 of those big goldfish and i was wondering if i can put them in the same tank because my big goldfish seem to eat a lot because when ever i put fish flakes in they would be gone in less than a minute and my tiny gold fish doesnt eat that much and im afraid that if i were to put them in the same tank the big one will eat all its food leaving none for the small ones and the small ones might die... so what should i do? should i keep them seperate?

My Beta died the other day so now I am looking to buy another fish. I would like a fish that also does well in small tanks (1.5 gallon), looks cool, and gets along with other fish. I would like to buy two fish this time, so they can have a friend, but they would both be in the 1.5 gallon tank. Can anybody give me any recommendations on what fish will meet my criteria?

FYI--I am willing to buy a bigger tank but not much bigger. My space is VERY limited so the biggest I can go is probably about 2 gallon.

I have been keeping fish for about 5 years now and I have a fairly calm community tank containing Tetra's, Danios, Pleco, a couple of gouramis - I have read that Discus should be kept separately but would it be possible to add them to my community tank without dire consequences

I have a footlong blue channel catfish named Joey who I recently moved from a 20 gallon tank to a 55 gallon tank. Since the ammonia was very high, I had to move him very fast, so therefore, I didn't give the tank the full time to cycle (only gave it one week). Because of this, the tank is not FULLY ready for him, and the bacteria that converts ammonia into nitrite and nitrite into nitrate does not exist in the tank yet. The ammonia levels are around 1-2 ppm, down from about 8-10 ppm in the old tank. They don't seem to be getting any higher as I tested this morning and tonight and the level seems to be much the same (It actually seemed to have dropped a little). To build up the bacteria (as suggested), I have added the contents of a fully functioning tank into the new tank. The tank in question is 3 gallons, and I took the filter, bio wheel, gravel, and ornaments and placed them in the 55 gallon tank.

How much of a difference will this make to the overall toxic levels of my new tank.

I have recently added 2 pink Kissing Gourami to my tank. Although all the info that I have read would suggest that they are relatively peaceful. They do chase each other round the tank - Should I take one of them out or will they eventually settle down

I took my fish out of the aquarium to clean it. I took 50% of the water off. And I washed the big rock with just water... I left the small rocks and artificial plants in the aquarium.
Now what? Do I add the new water first, or do I put my gold fish back in the aquarium first? Do I add Amquel + in the new water, or in the water after on the tank with the old water? Do I give my fish some food today? I don't want this fish to die... I have lost three already... and I really like this one. Please help. I am wating here while my fish is out of the tank in a small bowl. Thanks.

I set up my fish tank earlier today, and since I added the water I noticed a lot of bubbles all along the glass, plants, heater, etc. Some went away, but others have not. Just curious how long these take to go away.

I am getting betta(s) meaning I don't know how many I'm getting. I know all the things on why you can't put them in a tank together unless they are properly introduced. I just need to know, if I only get one betta, which I probably will, which one should I get?

It is in my big tank with my angelfish and gouramis and other guppies+ platies. So, I want to move it to my other tank to make feeding and cleaning easier. I did half (what she already had) earlier and that was about 20. Only about 7-10 lived. Someone told me just to dump them in (never listening to THEM again.) Then she suprised me when I was gone with 20-30 more! (hard to count) a few are deformed. One with three eyes and one with 5 and three eggs. She is all done. I am leaving them in there this time. How long should I leave them in HER breeding trap? She has been removed and the babies are fine. I don't want anymore to die (last time 10-15... they just kept dying) and now.... How do I move them? Should I wait a while? Thanks!

I was recommended to us a water clarifier today by a pet store. I have a new 29 gallon tank with 3 goldfish. I did leave it for 24 hours before I added my fish. I have since read that maybe it should have been longer. Anyways, my tank looked great and the goldfish seemed really happy (small tank before). Today which is 3 days after adding fish I noticed the water was cloudy. I did a water change of 1/4. I do use water conditioner and follow all the directions. I took in a water sample to the pet store today and they checked the water levels. He said everything was fine except the ph level which was low. He said this was normal for a new tank and not to worry and told me I should use a water clarifier, It has been about 3 hours but water is still cloudy. How long should it take? hours? days? thank you

My aquarium is dirty. I only have one goldfish on it. My three other fishes died :-(.... I have to clean it, but I have only a vague idea of how to do it.

Since my last fish died, I have been using Amquel + every other day on the aquarium, and it helped my last fish to be alive. But I think I need to change the water, right? How do I wash the rocks and the artificial plants? Do I use soap, or just water? And where do I put my fish while I clean my aquarium?

I have never done this... and I appreciate any help!

Thank you!

I have a gold gourami, a cory catfish, a male betta, and two ghost shrimp in my 29g. For those of you who don't know, bettas are peaceful with most other fish besides bettas.

What other kinds of fish could I put in? I don't want tetras, livebearers, or barbs...

I want angelfish sooooo much but I'm afraid my betta will tear them apart because they have long fins! Has anyone successfully kept angelfish and bettas together?

What other fish could I put in there and how many?

Thank you so much :-)
