I have been keeping fish for about 5 years now and I have a fairly calm community tank containing Tetra's, Danios, Pleco, a couple of gouramis - I have read that Discus should be kept separately but would it be possible to add them to my community tank without dire consequences

Some fish can be kept with Discus, but none of what you have. There is a few species of tetras that live in similar water conditions, most notably the cardinal, marble hatchets are another good one. The key with Discus is excellent water quality (no waste) and very soft water.

They can sometimes adapt to other conditions (harder water, boisterous tank mates), just don't keep any sucker-mouth catfish with them.

You could put a discus in with all of those fish EXCEPT the gouramis. They are very territorial and the discus is extremely fragile. Also, the discus need to be in a pretty large tank, even if you have a small one because they grow pretty big and when they are full size, they require lots of "floating room" since they dont really swim, the kinda float. I would not get one unless you want to make a tank only for discus because they're expensive and you don't wanna loose a $50 fish because you wanted to TRY something.

Point is, i wouldnt try it.

Ideally, discus SHOULD be kept alone. They have strict temperature and pH requirements that may not be good for other fish (discus like it WARM), and discus are just overall more comfortable on their own.
Frankly, I find discus are so beautiful that any other fish are distracting. You could get away with keeping one school of cardinal tetras; but if you want to go into discus, I suggest you get a nice big tank, plant it like crazy, and put some nice discus, only discus, in the tank.

the fish you have now could work..
know what you're getting into... Discus will need lots of space, probably a 90 gallon.. And soft water, low PH..Your other fish will adjust to this water because their natural habitat is similar.
if you can't offer the discus a good habitat, i would recommend not getting them.. They'll just suffer and die.
