Make sure you have a filter. Get a proper hang off the back filter rated for at least 20 gallons. This will help keep your water clear, and will keep ammonia and nitrite levels down. You'll still need to do weekly water changes of 25-30%.

You should have a heater, set to about 78F. With heaters, you get what you pay for; don't skimp here. Cheap heaters can break and the water will get too cold or too hot rather quickly in a 10 gallon tank.

You should have also have a lid, to stop evaporation, and lights set to be on 10-12 hours per day.

Gravel on the bottom is very helpful; it looks better, and good bacteria will grow in the gravel and break down toxic ammonia into much less toxic nitrates.

Research each of your fish - some fish like lots and lots of plants, and others like caves and rocks.

And of course you'll need water, treated with a dechlorinator.

1) 50 watt Heater (Rule of Thumb: 5watts per gallon of water -- 5 watts x 10 Gallons = 50 watts)

2) Filter (Power filters are relatively inexpensive and do a sufficient enough job. They hang on the back of the tank and has the return water flow back into your tank from the top of it)

3) A hood top with a light is a cheep way to go and should be fine.

Because your tank has been going for so long, it should be fine to start adding other fish to it. Just do not add more than about 3 fish per week and try not to add more than about 7 or 8 fish total.

if they are tropical add A HEATER AND GET SOME BOTTOM FEEDERS SUCH AS CORY CAT FISH .they help clean the bottom dont add any more fish see how these 2 new ones adjust and then get a cory cat fish and buy some pellets for him. they eat also. drop a couple in the tank at nite after u turn off the lite and yes you need a lite to burn a few hours a day if they do well u can add your cory in abut 10 days. do a one fourth water change at least once every couple weeks cause your tanlk is small and make sure the new water is the same temperature as what you remove. add a floating thermometer to your water than when making water changes you can test the water temperature to make sure its all the same

You could probably use a filter to keep the water cleaner. Gravel on the bottom will keep you from seeing uneaten food and fish poop. Might want a heater to keep the water temperature constant. These are all pretty much required for a larger tank. Depends on what kind of fish you have for a smaller tank like yours.

You can put almost anything you want in the tank. I have fake plants, bubble wall, and big rocks in one, and I have fake plants, a crab hut, a lighthouse, and a bubble wall in the other. I love to have the plants in there so the fish can hide if they want to.

that is really cool. unless you have chosen tropical fish you dont need a heater. your tank is basically finished. but try adding live plants, as this is way more healthier for your fish. if you get thin types of plants {not bushy}, then your fish will not eat it. plants reduce bad chemicals in the water {if any}. good luck with new fish
