Fish - December 2006

I've had the fish for about 2 weeks now. It has started to get black on his head, fins, and some on his belly. What is it, and what should I do?

I have a 2.7 gallon tank with only three small pink minnows in it. I am thinking of getting another kind of fish. What kinds of fish can live with them comfortably, but so that my other fish don't get hurt or get eaten. Oh, by the way, the fish are only about 3/4 - 1 inch long.

Hi ya'll My male Betta is blowing bubbles, so I feel so sorry for him because he is preparing for mating and he has no female to mate with. I want to know if anyone knows if there are any petstores that allows people to take there fish in and allow them to mate?

My local tap water is very hard. It limes up my tank and totally messes with the Ph. I've tried a salt pouch that kinda works but then I can't have snails (I'm guessing thats why they die). Peat helps too. But nothing really seems to fix it.

I have a 30g tank set up now. I've been buying 10g of water a month from Wal-Mart (5g "spring" water 5g "distilled" water) for my water changes and usually keep a gallon of spring water nearby for top-offs.

I've been doing this for a while now so I'd expect that all the original tap water would be gone. But my Ph is still off and when I try to adjust it w/ chemicals I get bad algea outbreaks (I've read that's because the hard water makes it so the Ph chemicals dont work... and if you keep adding more, you get bad algea).

I want to upgrade to a 100g tank but I want to get this water problem sorted out first.

HELP?

I bought him a few days ago. My ghost shrimp and fish seem to be eating fine, but he chooses not to eat. This is his second day not eating. I feed him flakes. My betta fish ate it and is ok with it since I read they generally don't like flakes. So I thought my frog would like them too. All my fish like it.

Last year for my friends birthday I bought her a small(2.5 gallon) tank with a lit cover, filter, and heater ith a few guppys(we decided she wanted this ahead of time and she was willing ot take the resposibility) unfoutunetly, neither of us knew at that time that you have to cycle the tank, the guppys died. I was thinking as a late christmas gift I would help her set up her tank again today and have her cycle it and in a few weeks buy her a betta

The only problem is, she is not the good at keeping hte tank clean, but I am willing ot help her casue I spend the night at her house usually at least once a week. On the rare occasion that I dont, would the betta be okay without its tank being cleaned for 2 weeks? Or do you have any other recommendations(like some kind of shrimp?)

sorry if this is a repos t but it been like 20 mins and my other question wasnt showing up in the fish secion
