If you provide enough rockwork and caves, your pleco will be fine. Try to avoid getting a male bushy-nosed pleco, as cichlids sometimes pick at their little 'nose bushes' which can get infected.
Depending on the size of your tank, you should probably get a rubber-lip pleco. They are tough, pretty small (5-6") and hardy.
If your tank is over 60 gallons, you could get a common pleco or a sailfin pleco, but know that they can grow to 20+ inches and will eventually outgrow the tank.

Another choice might a chinese algae eater. As babies they are too placid, but if your get an adult, he will be able to hold his own. They dont' eat much algae as adults, but they are tough!

It depends on the size of the aquarium, but in general breeding convicts are well known for the fierce protection of their nest and their tendancy to clear a tank of any threats to their brood, which is virtually any tankmates.

Generally you want a common pleco, or other large breed pleco. As long as it's bigger,or the same size as convict it should be fine. Pleco are pretty tough fish due to their armored scales and spines.

I want to say no, because sucker fish go pretty much with everything, but I would consult a book or another resource just to make sure since cichlids are so aggressive.

I have read that every tank should have a sucker fish. They hide in caves and dont bother other fish at all. Every thing I read on suggested groups of fish contained sucker fish.

I had a 2-3 inc. pleco in my 55 gal tank and they eat all his fins off. I had to go get a 8 inc one and they have not picked at him.
