This depends greatly on the type of fish. Please post the type of fish you have and I'll let you know.

They only breed if in ponds (not tanks). A couple of my fish just chased and chased one particular fish, bit upsetting actually, and then . . . babies. I assume the fish they chased was the female and the two chasing, male.

it depends on what type of fish. if you have betta fish, then you will know if the male has made a ring of bubbles all around the top of the tank (this is for him to put the eggs in until they hatch). i am not sure about any other type of fish.
