Dogs - March 2007

My dog is ridiculously afraid of jumping into the back of my Expidition. I have tried cookies, treats, positive encouragement- everything! She has no problem jumping out, and she isn't afraid of car rides- she just can't get in. I have resorted to picking her up and putting her in the car, but it's getting old. Any tips? Thanks!!

I just got a Keeshond puppy about a month ago and she started having seizures 3 weeks ago. We've gotten her on medication, but how common is canine epilepsy? I'm also worried about it appearing when she's so young, since most things I've read about it say that a dog has its first seizure at about one year. We think it's canine epilepsy because we haven't found anything else wrong with her that might cause seizures.

lucas: alaskan malamute

duke: maltese
plush: HUGE golden!
mimi: 8 day old yorkie

sophie: found in street
mon: sophie's sister (found together)
my question is, how can they survive together, they wont fight? can they kill the baby? (mimi)

It was recommended to me that I stop being so liberal with doggy treats for my 9 month old female puggle. I used to give too much junk food. So I occasionally give her a couple mini carrots when I feel indulgent. She is kind of so so on the whole carrot thing. I have learned that she LOVES apples, especially granny smith and macintosh. She goes nuts for some granny smith. She likes them almost as much as company.
1) Is it okay to give her 2 - 3 tablespoon size treat of apples a couple time a week (she ways about 10 pounds)?
2) Does this indicate some deficiency in her diet or some disease? It just doesn't make sense that she likes apples more than other treats, especially meat flavored treats but she does.

I adopted a dog 4 months ago and he seems to get along fine with everyone except for my dad. whenver he see my dad he tries to run away or get away from him. we think he was abused as a puppy but how can i get him to see that my dad is ok. thanks

Im trying to teach my dog to play fetch instead of just running in circles where i have to tag him. But whenever i throw a ball for him he either watches it pass by or runs the opposite direction. how can i teach him to go get it.

My American Cocker Spaniel will eat everything and anything. He is very hyper and feed the recommended doses and he is chunky. Is there anything thing out there that will resist his temptation for eating all the time.

PS - kids use to feed him table food when I was not looking for 11 years and now that they are older they've told me about all the food they've feed him. BAD KIDS!!!!

When is the best age to spay/neuter a giant breed dog?
I have a 9 wk old female Great Pyrenees mix and my uncle has her brother. What would be the best age to spay and neuter them?

I've heard that spaying and neutering too early can cause problems in growth and other development. Is this true?

My uncle says that neutering early is better for a dogs health. Is he right?

I think pits should be used as police dogs. They are super smart, loyal and obedient. The cops wouldn't even have to sick the dog on someone if they had a pit, the culprit would listen to their commands just seing the dog. I hate all of the negative press that pits get. I love my Red-nose pit. Wud up, Bubba!
