My dog is ridiculously afraid of jumping into the back of my Expidition. I have tried cookies, treats, positive encouragement- everything! She has no problem jumping out, and she isn't afraid of car rides- she just can't get in. I have resorted to picking her up and putting her in the car, but it's getting old. Any tips? Thanks!!

This is not just when going to the vet- she also does this before going on walks on a hill a ways away from my house. Well you might want to try getting in the car first and calling her into the car and see how that works. She might jump in the car if your there so I'd try. If she dose give her a treat so she feels like shes done something good so she will continue to get in your car willingly.

I had this same problem with my 7 month old lab puppy. He pulled alot with just a leash and was very strong (I can't imagine it with Danes). So we tried the Gentle Leader. He also refused to walk and would just sit and stay no matter how many treats were around him. We gave up on that and started to walk using a regular leash again. He still pulled alot so after a month we switched back to gentle leader. He resists and makes it hard to put on, but he walks and is doing great now. We reward him with food when ever he heels, and do not let him go on the grass because there he tries to rub it off. Hope this helps,

They sell doggie ramps for cars. This lets the dogs walk into the cars rather then just jump. Perhaps your dog is just afraid of jumping in and will not be afraid of walking in. Good luck!

If you can do it safely (ie not near roads) get in the front and leave the back open, but just wait there. Ignoring can work wonders. You might try teaching a general jump command also, e.g. onto tables, then use the command once she has mastered it well. Having said that, I have a 95lb Bloodhound who refuses to learn, and insists that I lift her rear end.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/XCvCx

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

open both back seat doors. go in one door, scoot thru calling the dog and go out the other, showing dog it wont be trapped. u can also play ball thru the open doors. does ur dog like to sleep with u? lay down across the seat and invite ur dog to lay on the floor near u. as suggested above, get a doggie step for her. i have a horse that has a terrible fear of horse trailer...he is 12 yrs old and very powerful...the problem is the previous owners never thought to trailer train him and so he was in a trailer only 3 times in his whole life and the fourth time was when i took him home...every single time he was injured...so his fear is quite reasonable...and very hard to overcome. the most important thing to remember is love, patience, consistancy and understanding.

-can she jump to the floor then the seat?
-can she jump on a step/box then up?
-try getting her to jump on something the same hight but not related to the car.
-will she jump in another similar car?
-does she just like being picked up?
-try to get her to jump us high as she can for a treat and relate that behaviour to the car

or - gravity helps her in the way out, maybe the jump up causes pain??

I have to pick my 2 female newfies up to get them into my Suburban. But my male jumps right in. I have to be careful though because one of my girls had a severly broken leg several months ago, and it still gives her trouble. I would recommend getting a doggie ramp. I have to get one too. Jumping up and down into vehicles could cause injuries to their back, legs and hips. You can try throwing treats of toys in the car if you want.

maybe it is to high for her to get into. try on of those doggy step stools.that's how i trained mine she just wasn't able to jump in for some reason. but if the only reason you put her in the car is to take her to the vet she might be scared try taking her to the park or just along to the grocery store it might help if she thinks she is going somewhere else. mine loves to go pick-up the kids from school. good luck
