Dogs - March 2007

We got a 4 year old Staffy from a rescue center last Autumn and now want to train him to bark.

In the 6 months that we've had him he hasn't barked once.

We suspect that he has been trained NOT to bark, but how can we undo that training?

I know that if we can find a way to get him to bark we can encourage him to do it again and again by giving him treats, but how do we get the initial bark out of him?

A lady i know has a 3 bedroomed, reasonable sized house with a large yard. she is blind. up until a few weeks ago she had 11 dogs (mostly small, the largest being her 2 labrador guide dogs). She now only has 9 due to 1 dying and another being rehomed due to him attacking the other dogs.

I still believe she has too many. most of the time they are allowed the run of the house but when they get too much, the smaller dogs have pens/cages that they get put in. The annoying thing is, i know you will say to report her, but she is friends with the local dog pound, RSPCA and police, they seem to see no wrong in what she is doing.

What else can i do?

My dog doesn't drink heavily but he has the drops out of the bottom of about 3 or 4 bottles of beer each night. We don't feed him bowls full but he scrounges for it now, as soon as we open a bottle he sits there grunting until we get to the bottom of it to feed him the dregs!!

Will this have any effect on his health? He's really snotty and sneezes a lot ?

I thinks he's an alcoholic now! We'll have to send him to AA !!!

I have been giving my dogs the Science Diet dried food ( biscuits) for a while now however have heared lately from people that its not a very fine brand. I was thinking of switching to pedigree dried food, ut I'm still thinking. Is pedigree a good?

Our dog who is about 13 years now and has recently stopped eating his food. If you watch him, he will eat for a small bit but then jump back almost startled by something and start barking at the bowel. Sometimes even frightened. Then walk away. It is clear he is hungry. The only way we can get him to eat his whole meal is to be there and almost hold the dish for him. Any ideas? Could it just be old age going to his head?

I want to start a dog walking service for people in my suburb but I have no idea where to start.

♥ How much should I charge? I am planning to walk them for an hour each day. I was thinking $15 per walk but it might be too much.

♥ What do I ask people who want their dog walked? For example: temperament of dog, does it get along with other dogs... etc. without sounding too "weird".

I have 2 dogs, a girl and a boy.
A little while back my girl went into heat,
so we had her stay at my grandma's house (so my boy wouldn't go crazy)
Yesterday we brought her back (she's not in heat anymore) and my boy went CRAZY
He's pumped with hormones or something,
he wont get off of her!!
I don't know what to do, he wouldn't let me sleep yesterday night!
Is there such a thing as a dog that's TOO horny?
Should I do something? He's even driving my girl crazy, cause she doesn't want it every 5 seconds...

What can I do to calm him down?

i have an 8mth old mini daschund,while at home she is great & very patient with my 2 young kids, she knows basic commands & is a really good girl. when people come to our house she is a little growliy when they first walk in but she settles down pretty much straight away, when i take her for walks she is fine as long as we don't come across any other people or any other dogs soon as she sees someone or another dog she goes mental growling, barking bearing her teeth trying to pull off the lead & there is nothing i can do to calm her down & she seems to getting worse, does anyone have any ideas please help!

He doesnt do this always, but when he does he smells terribly! I dont get it, his biscuit bowl is always full and he never misses out on his dinners, (he LOVES his dinners) yet he goes outside and eats bad food. I dont have this problem with my other dog. How can I stop him from doing this, he is very stubborn.

my puppy is doing fine with potty training except in the rain we stand outside for hours on end in the pooring down rain after his request to go potty and he refuses to go. i get so frustrated and put him in his crate for a while and try again/nothing. if i let him stay out of the crate he finds a corner and uses the potty there i am getting frustrated. we are starting our rainy season what can i do

Well i have a female dog she is a year old well she looks like she is very pregnent. Well i didnt mate her with my male i dont even know when she came to heat. I just notice 2 weeks ago that her nipples are hanging and she had gain some weight. So i took her to the vet so they could check her, they felt on her belly and said that she was and to bring in the follow week to do a x-ray so i did well they x-ray her and they didnt see nothing on the x-ray. So they think they mistaked how many weeks she was they thought she was about 45 days before i had took her in. But i think she is about 4-5 weeks maybe going to 6 weeks but i had her x-ray last week on the 13th. Well she is still getting bigger her belly is starting to drop and vagaina is starting to swell but i cant feel nothing in her belly but it is swollen (hard). So i dont know if it was to early to see some thing on the x-ray thats what the vets thinks but i dont know. ANY INFO ON FALSE PREGNANCY?????

Here is the whole story. We just moved to a new place, and we had 2 dogs, the one was sick, and he was dumpy and was pooping straight blood. We were unable to take this dog because of the blood so we left him at a relatives and went to check on him periodically. He passed yesterday. So now we only have the one dog here with us. The thing is, these 2 dogs have been together for there whole lives (7mos), and they werent used to being apart. The dog we have noe, suddently became unusually tired, and not like her self. She some times turns her nose up at food, and drinks just a little bit of water. She is normally a little on the hyper side, and loves to see people, and goes crazy. Now she just lays there and just wags her tail when you come close to her. Could she have parvo, or is she just experiencing sadness of being away from the other puppy?? could she just be really tired??? or bored even?? Please help.......
