A dog like a black and tan or black and red will be born with a lot of black and might have some face markings and a little bit of markings on their legs. The tan or red comes in more as the pup ages. A sable is born normally darker, sometimes so dark that you can only see sabling around the neck, they get lighter as they age and will sometimes end up with something that looks like a skunk stripe down their back when they get to be about 3 to 4 months. Then the black tipping starts to come in more. A sable will normally go through another lightening and darkening period at about a year of age. Some bi-colors at birth can look almost solid black with just some color under the tail. They will then get more markings on the bottoms of their legs. Some bi-s will also get some markings in the ears as well.

Depends on the Mom & Dad doggies. I had a red sable who was long coated. That's an interesting mix. Her undercoat had the black saddle but it took her 3 years to totally develop it,and it was only seen when she went swimming. The rest of the time she was a very red dog with a tan and black face.

Our shephard is a sable and she looked more black and tan when she was a pup but as she has gotten older her color seems to "recede". I also think that they get darker as they get older as well.
