Our dog who is about 13 years now and has recently stopped eating his food. If you watch him, he will eat for a small bit but then jump back almost startled by something and start barking at the bowel. Sometimes even frightened. Then walk away. It is clear he is hungry. The only way we can get him to eat his whole meal is to be there and almost hold the dish for him. Any ideas? Could it just be old age going to his head?

Dogs can't make the mental leap from having pain while eating to the real cause being stiff joints, medical problem, etc. It would be HIGHLY advisable to take your pooch to the vet to rule out any medical problems. All the dog knows is when he is at his food bowl he's experiencing something that is causing him some sort of distress. If this has been going on for a very LONG time he may also be malnourished. Is his water bowl situated in the same manner as his dinner bowl and does he also have the same reaction to his water bowl? He may have a blockage or something that is causing him pain while he's eating.

Regardless of WHY; he should be seen by a vet; any animal refusing to eat definitely is having some sort of problem.

It could be the bowl. Try using a different one.
