Dogs - February 2007

I have a pug calendar and it has sayings for each day. The one for todays say" If dogs could read books. I'm sure that they'd be books about chasing and catching cats"

However my pugs have no interest in cats. So some of the books I think they would read would be.

How to Find and Fluff a Pillow
Food, Food, Food
How To Sleep for 23 Hour a Day and Still Appear Busy.

Reyna is an absolutely gorgeous pit born on Christmas Day and she has been under my care for approximately a week now. The previous owners assured me that she was ready to take home.. she has been weaned, she is on solid food, she has her vision, motor skills, etc. and she is no longer in need of any milk replacement.

Ever since I've had her, I've noticed that she has had little white worms in her stool. I bought a Safegard 3-in-1 dewormer from the petstore but on the pack it doesn't specify whether or not 4 weeks is too early to deworm. Should I simply wait about two or three more weeks? More and more worms are starting to appear daily. Is there any harm in deworming her now?

Also she often shakes and trembles violently when she is sleeping or awake. I have heard that this is normal for puppies in order to develop their nerves and motor skills, is that true?

Last but not least.. is it too early to start attempting to housebreak her? I have made no attempt as of yet. THANKS!

I was just sitting here, watching tv and exploring the Internet when my dog, who is sitting beside me on the couch, started breathing really hard. I thought she was gonna hack something up or something. She's settled down again, but I wonder if this could be a symptom of a bigger problem.

She doesn't normally pant like that, even when asleep and she wasn't asleep when she was panting. She also threw up something yellow a couple days ago and she's never thrown up before. She made a very similar sound then and I was expecting her to throw up when she made those sounds a few minutes ago. She didn't. Her food and drinking habits have not changed, so I don't think these problems are related to that, but I could be wrong.

(a) pet store
(b) shelter
(c) breeder

and... have a:

(a) purebred
(b) mixed breed

there is no right or wrong answer, i am just interested in peoples opinions. I can understand why someone would want to get a purebred dog from a reputable breeder (not a backyard breeder) if they have researched the breed and found the exact type of breed that will suit their lives.

i, myself would prefer to get a pup from a shelter, mixed or not, just because thats who i am. i have nothing against people who would prefer not to get one from a shelter, but i'd also like to know why? (again, just out of curiosity).

happy answering! cant wait to read some opinions!! =)

When I was walking my dog today we passed a dead bird. My dog rolled her body over the dead bird? Why does she do this?

It often seems like my dog is paying attention to music & I wonder if he understands that it is meant for listening pleasure.

My girlfriend has a pair of parrots who were taught to dance whenever they heard music which leads me to beleive that they understand music but that doesn't mean that dogs think the same.

I have been stimilating their anus area to defecate and urinate. At first they defected and urinated, but now it seems that they are urinating more than defecating.

I am shocked and appalled at the high kill rate of over 90% at their Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. They kill 5 animals a day. I think Peta should concentrate on it's adoption of animals instead of comparing chickens to holocaust victims. http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petaKillsAnimals.cfm

We got a new puppy at Christmas and she goes potty where ever she pleases. If I'm lucky she'll use the pee pee pads but does number 2 where ever. Any suggestions.

Her name is Bonnie. We got here from the pound when she was less than 6 weeks old. At the time the pound was not sure of her breed. They told us she was probably a terrier mix (Jack Russell perhaps) but she grew up and is definitely too big to be a terrier. She is now a year old, weighs about 40-45 lbs, and stands a little taller than knee high. We are thinking she may have some pit in her. What do you think? Pictures can be found here:

Thanks for the input!
