Lyme disease can display in a whole range of ways - from crippling arthritis to lethargy to having no signs whatsoever. It varies from dog to dog. Where do you live? I live in the #2 county in the country for Lyme, so it seems more dogs have it than not. Lyme is not fatal, and is often no big deal, but it can be very hard to get rid of. I wouldn't be paranoid!

vets have a quick in house test they can run (3DX by idexx). Right when they get it they may be limping, have a fever, not eat, not want to move, act really painful and shake. However not all dogs show this stage and go on to a chronic form. Some chronically infected dogs will show on and off lameness, often affecting more than one leg. Sometimes it can lead to kidney failure and other stuff that everyone here has already mentioned.
Be aware that there still alot of stuff not known about lyme disease, and there are lots of different ideas not only on how to treat it but also if it should be treated at all. So expect lots of different answers from people here, and probally from vets to.

look at your dog's skin if you can. There will be either a tick poking out or a black dot(the half of the tick thats left) with a red ring around it, a ring of mostly normal looking skin and then another red ring.

It comes from ticks as far as i know. From either other animals, from being outdoors where there are other animals. Humans can get it too.
