Getting the tails done on a dog is considered docked not bob! It is usually a breed standard or the dog could be a working dog and it is done for his safety.

Even though natural bobs sometimes happens.... docking is done around five days of age. The reason for docked tails varies from breed to breed. As someone mentioned... the hunting/working breeds are docked for various modes of work. Usually to avoid damage to the tail during the job it was bred to do. Since "work" is not asked of dogs that much anymore... the docking has pretty much turned into a "fancy".

some are born that way, but most are not. As far as docking goes, it is absolutely unnecessary and some countries have banned it. It may still be a show standard but I hope it will pass and be discontinued because it is just a fashion, not a need. Since most puppies have their tails docked a few days after birth, they are not as traumatized by it as clipping ears which is done when they are older. Dogs utilize their tails for balance. I hope the animal mutilation will be stopped and that the show rings will lead the way with advocating for keeping the tails and ears.

Hi LINDA S!!
There have been no scientific studies or double blind trials conducted to compare the effects of tail docking in one sample of dogs with a similar sample of undocked dogs. Similarly there have been no studies that measure the initial pain and the ongoing pathological pain inflicted on docked dogs. Due to the phenomena of deafferentation (suppression of afferent nerve impulses) and phantom limb pain, scientific regulatory bodies would not permit such inhumane research. Even without this information from specific scientific research, our current knowledge is sufficient to show the canine tail is an anatomically and physiologically important organ which should not be docked simply because tradition dictates it. Cosmetic tail docking cannot be justified medically or scientifically and recent advances in our knowledge about pain indicate that it should he regarded as an inhumane act. The tail is important as a means of counter-balance when the dog is carrying out complicated movements such as leaping, walking along narrow structures, or climbing. Tail muscles are also important in stabilising the vertebral column and supporting the action of the extensor muscles of the back as well as those of the croup and uttocks.

Docking dogs originates in the old Roman empire when the worm-like muscles in the tail of the dog were thought to cause rabies, leading to the tradition of cutting off the tail as a preventive measure.

However many dog shows take off points for a dog not having it's tail docked... so nowadays tails are docked because of the owner.

I wish the practice would stop. I go to a vet that will not perform docking or cropping. Hoping others will pick up the cause.

Some breeds have natural stub tails while others may be docked for working purposes.

some are born that way...some are kept to 'bredding standards' (docked tail) and some have to have it removed...dogs don't really need their tails...they can wag their butts just fine.
cats are the same way...
