It often seems like my dog is paying attention to music & I wonder if he understands that it is meant for listening pleasure.

My girlfriend has a pair of parrots who were taught to dance whenever they heard music which leads me to beleive that they understand music but that doesn't mean that dogs think the same.

well they don't think like a parrot..who's mental ability can be like that of a 4 yr old. but they DO understand pitch, and key.

dogs howl. wolves do this in the wild. a wolfs howl can tell his pack who he is, where he is...and how he feels, etc.
they can also change their pitch to warn other wolf packs to stay away. or when they are close to food. they also howl when they are celebrating, like the birth of new pups. wolves use these howls, barks, and other noises to communicate. it's their music!

so i imagine that dogs understand music far more than we humans give them credit for.

My friend's dog used to howl whenever we practised. It obviously didn't howl in tune to what we played, but it clearly howled in a higher pitch when we played higher notes and in a lower pitch when we played lower notes.

Having observed this, I cannot say whether dogs understand music (howling is instinctual), but I do know they have some concept of pitch.

My mutt recognises the closing/opening tunes of lots of tv programmes that go out at six p.m. - cos he knows that it means it's time for him to be fed. He gets very excited when UKTV Gold broadcast an entire weekend of some things like Stargate.

My friend's dog would hwl at the tune of "Happy Birthday" and no other song.

I make up a little tune for each of my dogs and they know which tune goes to whom. I think when they associate tunes with happy times they come to recognize them.

Dogs have quite good hearing and have complex minds. I believe that it is reasonably logical that they can understand tunes of music.
