Dogs - February 2007

We have a 6 month old yellow lab that is scared of EVERYTHING. You would honestly believe that we mistreat her if you saw her. She is extremely lovable, but runs and hides at the drop of a hat. My husband bought her to dove hunt with, but that's not going to happen she would just hide. Is there anything we can do to calm her down and be less of a chicken?

I already have two dogs a newfoundlander and a wolfhound terrier mix. They are both getting older and before they get too miserable my fiance wants to buy me a puppy. i just dont know what i want. i am thinking i would like a small dog but afraid the 2 i have now wont like a smaller dog as they are used to being around big dogs. i am considering a cockerspaniel (the smallest i am willing to go) a husky, another Newfie or a Great Dane. what do y'all think i should get?

I am going to get a puppy sometime this year (I am considering a French Bulldog) and I do not know how to tell if a breeder is reputable. I know that you shouldn't go to a pet store and to watch out for puppymills, but what else should I look for? Thank you.

I have been living in the Caribbean for 12 years and we always give our dogs chicken bones and not once has one of them choked on a bone. What are the odds that a dog will choke on a chicken bone. Maybe American dogs are too sheltered and have lost the ability to eat bones safely.

My neighbor has a dog that is in its cage all day, the dog barks all day. I feel sorry for the dog and I want to know if I can call police or some kind of government authority to confront my neighbor and solve this problem. Or is it a fact that the police or some kind of animal government thing cannot do anything?

is there anywhere to look to see how long a certain breed of dog lives? my dogs not a common breed and i want to find out somehow.

My dog gets to go out 2xs a day, ran and allowed time to go potty...
She gets fed the same time, the same amount during the day...
Sometimes she goes weeks without going in the house...
If she is put in another room by herself she will go, if she is left in the house, sometimes she is good and then there are random times she goes??
I cant figure out what to do...
i tried holding her face close to the mess and yell no
i have left her in the cage while i wasnt around, then after a couple days i would let her free when i left for only a few hours, then built it up...
she has nothing to be jealous about, she gets the same attention as before, she gets well fed, well loved and played with...
any suggestions, that are serious, would be greatly appreciated.

I would love to have a Maltese or Yorkie can anyone suggest a breeder in San Francisco or in the Bay Area... I have small kids and have tried the SPCA but they refuse to let me adopt a dog ( even a pup )...any suggestions ?

Hi my papillon hates going to the bathroom when its cold and wet outside so my parents thought about potty training him (toilet) so we went out and bought a trainers seat (for toddlers) and we can put him on the toilet but he wont go! no matter how many times we tried! PLease help me!

I just had to put down my dog, Barkley. I've had him for 17 years!
He "grew up" with both my kids, but the last few months were horrible for him. I know he was suffering and I know I did what was best for him by taking him to the vet, yet it's very hard to say goodbye to him. I can still see him looking at me...as if he knew what was going to happen and was grateful to be getting out of so much pain.

my 6 month old jack russell terrier keeps eliminating inside the house. everytime it eliminates outside i praise it and give it a treat but he still eliminates inside. how do i stop this?

I am a dog trainer, and I have been very intrigued with the trend in buying designer dogs lately. What is your opinion on them? Do you think they are mutts, or do you think they should be AKC certified? If so, which is your favorite? How much is the most you would pay for one? I was just curious....

I have a 1 year old chihuahua he is really cute and usually nice, but if he is in his dog bed and you try to touch him he will bite and he also hates anyone he doesn't know and he will bite them. Does anyone know how I can teach him to be nicer, even though I've tried everything and I'm pretty sure its impossible. But Hey expect the impossible, right?
