I just had to put down my dog, Barkley. I've had him for 17 years!
He "grew up" with both my kids, but the last few months were horrible for him. I know he was suffering and I know I did what was best for him by taking him to the vet, yet it's very hard to say goodbye to him. I can still see him looking at me...as if he knew what was going to happen and was grateful to be getting out of so much pain.

The only way that I can handle putting any of my dogs to sleep is that fact that I know that they are in a better place and that they are no longer suffering. It is hard, really really hard, but you just have to remember all of the good years that you have had together and that you gave him the best gift that you possibly could.

He's in a better place, and no more suffering...
I've been there, but it gets better with time. Maybe you should get another dog....I did and it really helps. You could rescue one from a shelter or rescue group. I did and it helps both you and the dog. They seem to know that you are giving them a second change at life and are grateful to you for that. My rescued dogs name is Buster Brown and he's a great dog. I got him from a shelter on his last day and we are living happily ever after.

I lost my German Shepherd Dog four years ago, December.
I was devastated and some things that helped me was I have a photo of her and a poem I wrote for her as well as something I wrote for her which I put behind the photo and I have her ashes.
Here's a website and another link that might help you too:
http://www.petloss.com/
http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html
For me, the devastation passed and now I have warm memories of her. It has been said that when you pass on, the first thing to greet you will be all the dogs and cats you ever owned.
I don't doubt that!
Hang in there. Sorry for your loss.

Just know that you did the right thing.......Barkley is in heaven now. Sometimes we tend to be selfish, by not wanting to let go of our pets ---"friends" rather then thinking if our pets are in pain and suffering. Its a very hard discison to make but just know that your pet will hold a special place in your heart.

I am so sorry for your loss, I went through the same thing last year. I got through it by remembering all the fun times and the better days. As much as it pains us to make these decisions you know in your heart that you made the right choice. It was the last kind thing you could do for your best friend.

Awwww I know its really sad. My rabbit Kokonut just died last month(yes I know I spell her name this way on purpose) It was really hard for me and I buried her in my back yard so everytime I looked out there I would cry. Just realize that you did what was best for your pup and don't try to forget him. Remember all the good times you had and maybe when your ready get another pup to help you grieve with the loss of your other dog. I'm really really really sorry. I hope you feel better.

Go to the put down and look him staight in the eye dont turn away. I was really little when i had to put my dog down and when my mom opened the door and i asked where if Champ? she said in this jar where his ashes where it took me 10 years to get over it but i did after they do it take all the pictures u have of him and make a whole book just for him and rite about him. That way u will always remember him for wat he was.

Yes, you did the right thing. I know it's the hardest thing you could ever do, but just knowing Barkley isn't hurting anymore should make you happy... not sad. Your hurt will get better, just as his has.

I know its hard...I'm sorry for your loss.

I don't know you or your family personally so, I don't know how ya'll deal with the loss of a "family member".

I lost my pet and the only way I knew how to deal with the pain was to turn it into love for another homeless animal.

Time will tell if thats what you and your children need to do.
You will be in my thoughts......
