If you live in an apartment a Shih Tzu would be the best choice. The sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet. The Shih-Tzu is a friendly, nonaggressive dog that is a good companion for children and other breeds of dogs. Shih-Tzus are known for their fun-loving play, romping around the apartment or in the country side.
The Shih-Tzu is a people oriented dog, they cherish no more than the love of people. They will sit patiently, remaining still with their eyes gazing intently on your face waiting for you to call them over to be patted. The Shih-Tzu is not a one person dog. Shih-Tzus are happy to entertain any stranger, once accepted by the family. This is one reason that they are becoming popular. They make friends where ever they go.
The Shih-Tzu has a lap dog personality. It is not high strung nor demanding. The pet Shih-Tzu is content during the day to lie in a corner with his legs stretched out behind him, snoring softly. If he has a choice he would prefer to be curled up in your lap. They can amuse themselves or be quiet for hours, lying in a favorite spot, yet love to play with you and their toys even as mature adult dogs. The life expectancy is about 13 to 17 years.

A dog who needs a home. A dog who fits your personality. Full bred dogs are fine, but why not choose one who may never get a home. I got two of my cats right off the street, and the most recent from the humane society and I couldnt ask for better kitties. If i were you, I wouldnt worry about the best "kind" of dog, go to the shelter and take a few out youll be surprised how quick youll fall in love with a mutt(and just so you know, the shelters DO get full breed dogs sometimes)It just angers me that people can keep buying from breeders while perfect animals sit lonely in shelters.

Think of your search for the 'best' dog' as a dating programme. You'll need to take an honest look at yourself, assess how much time you will have for it, what your lifestyle is (whether you like exercise and the outdoors or prefer to stay in etc), how much noise and damage you are willing to live with and your budget.
The perfect dog for you is the breed that will match closest to you. Then again, a simple visit to the pound or shelter can put all this planning to waste because you'll fall in love with a darling moggie who needs a good home and will love you with all her heart and soul. Keep doing your research and look around. Best of luck!!

It depends on what you are looking for, and how much time and energy you have to put into a dog. A longhair dog is going to take more time than one that is slick coated. and one with a lot of energy will need more exercise that one that is a couch potatoe.

The "best" dog depends on the person, their living conditions and their lifestyle. The best dog for me might not be the best dog for you.
Do your research and find a dog that will fit your lifestyle.

It depends on your lifestyle. Dogs come in so many different shapes and sizes it just depends on what you are looking for. Do you want long hair, short hair? 150 pds, 5 pds? High energy, easy going? I woud suggest looking into different breeds on the AKC website, and see what will be the best fit for you.

Take a quiz and find out which dog is the best for you and then go to a shelter and find a similar one.

In my opinion, I think mutts are the best choice. I had a German sheperd/Collie mix, and that was one loyal, long living dog (he lived 22 years!)
