I already have two dogs a newfoundlander and a wolfhound terrier mix. They are both getting older and before they get too miserable my fiance wants to buy me a puppy. i just dont know what i want. i am thinking i would like a small dog but afraid the 2 i have now wont like a smaller dog as they are used to being around big dogs. i am considering a cockerspaniel (the smallest i am willing to go) a husky, another Newfie or a Great Dane. what do y'all think i should get?

I have a long history of having cockerspaniels i just worry about their health as they age and i hate saying goodbye. .. Triplescoop, my grandpas dog duke was like that too, he also played soccer with us.. i am leaning towards these two breeds the most.

If you know the temperaments of the dogs you now have. I'd say to go from there. How to they react to a small dog? I'm sure they must have had contact at one time or the other with small dogs. If you feel better with a bigger dog, seeing they have had more exposure with large dogs. Then go with your instincts. If you decide to get a big dog or a small one. I would say just to gradually introduce it to the dogs you now hove. It would be a good idea not to leave the pup alone with your older dogs until they get used to the new addition. Don't forget to give the dogs you now have more attention. Almost like bringing a new baby home to older children. You don't want to make the dogs you now have feel left out. Be there as much as you can with the new puppy so that you can monitor the three dogs to see how it goes. Once your dogs get used to the new pup you shouldn't have any problem. I hope this helped out a bit. Good luck!

Well, cocker spaniels are wonderful dogs. They have nice personalities but they do require a bit more in the grooming dept (though with a Newfie you may know all about that?) Huskies are beautiful dogs and would be a bit smaller than the Newfie/GD's I suppose but they can have difficult personalities from what I've heard - very territorial, etc.. I would second the lab, they have such lovely souls but they are VERY high energy LOL I personally like our lab mix. She is only 30 lbs but she looks every bit the lab, mini lab LOL Walk her twice a day for 20 min ea and throw in some play time and she is worn down enough to enjoy :)
Mixes are also great b/c they tend to have less health problems and you can rescue a full grown one (thereby knowing the dogs size and temper when you get it) from a shelter. I could never have a GD LOL They are as tall as I am but I understand they are wonderful pets.

I have a weimaraner and he's the best dog I have ever had with the rarest personality in a dog I've ever seen, they act like humans and they are a lot of fun even when they grow up.They do require a lot of attention, but they will love you, follow you, play with you and challenge you a lot. They are also very hyperactive dogs and very very intelligent,I don't know how much time and energy you have and I'd recommend you to read about them before you decide, they're not as big as Great Dane and they need to be well trained right from the beginning.Don't get weimaraner only for the looks, they are very loyal and great companions, they really are as another family member.Good luck with your new coming puppy :-)

I raised siberian huskeys, but I can't say that they made great pets. Very smart, but have a mind of their own, and always need to be pened or on a leish. I had to put in an electric fence around the bottom of my males pen to keep him from escaping. He figured out how to unravel the chain link fence.
I now have a black lab/golden retriever mix. She is the best dog I have ever had, and can't imagine ever having anything but a retriever. The only problem is they like to chew on everything when they are young, so you need to keep a lot of chew toys for them, and make sure they learn what not to chew on.

I would say cocker spaniel is the way to go. I own one, and he is a real sweet heart. The only downside really is that they require grooming and clipping every 3-4 weeks, and daily brushing. If you are willing to do this, then a cocker would be a wonderful new addition. They are affectionate, easy to train, and love attention. I highly recommend this breed.

I am partial to Great Danes. I have owned MANY dogs and my great dane was the best. She was all black and we named her Salem. She thought she was a lap dog! She would try and sit in our laps, she would try and sleep in our bed, and she would literally sit on the couch like a human and watch tv with us.
Loved her so much.

Great Danes get HUGE, (when on hind legs, larger than an adult) so if the dogs u have are big that may be a little cautious of him/her.
