It depends on the genetics, but you probably will get both. If they are in the parents' backgrounds you may even get a wirehair.

In Collies its done all the time. Roughs to Smooths. The Smooth coat is a dominant gene. In order for a dog to be Smooth it must carry the dominant smooth gene...if it does carry the gene it is Smooth.. There is no such thing as a recessive smooth gene. A Rough Collie has no Smooth gene to pass on. The only way to get a Smooth from a Rough is to breed it to a Smooth. In that breeding, you will get some Smooth and some Rough(If the Smooth is carrying a rough gene). The Roughs again cannot produce a smooth, (the smooth gene is never a recessive) but the Smooths can produce Roughs as rough is carried as a recessive gene. If you breed two Smooths together (both having a rough parent therefore carring a rough recessive gene, you will get some Smooths WITH a recessive rough gene that can produce roughs. It inherited one dominante smooth gene and one recessive rough gene ...and some Smooths that will only produce Smooths as they inherited two Smooth genes, one from each parent, they have no recessive rough gene so they will not produce a Rough no matter what you breed it too-we call those Pure For Smooths. You may get a Rough (inheriting two recessive rough genes). Even a rough from two smooth parents cannot produce a smooth. It is never a recessive

Depending on the genetics of the dogs. If the short haired dog does not carry long coat, then there will be no coats in that litter. Research the genetics of the bloodlines.

You are asking a genetics question, which actually requires a fair amount of research and work to determine the answer and even then, you will not be able to predict absolutely.

There is a program that helps you to predict coat colour and length and it is a free program. If you are serious about dog breeding and gentics, please check out the site that I have referred to.

Have fun with genetics...it really is fascinating!

Medium length coat is in-between short and long...you'll get a mixture of both types of fur...you can envision that, can't you ? By the way, I love long-haired miniature dachschunds. The reddish brown ones...sooooo cute.

OMG! talking about cute puppies makes me want my doxies to have pups!! I have a short haired black & tan... her mother has since had a long haired pup in one of her litters.
I bet that you will get a mixture or you may get all of one or the other... it's a puzzle as the other guy said when playing with genetics.
that was a cool website!

Actually that's sort of a crap shoot, Darlin:) A lot of characteristics like that lean toward which parents genes are dominant. In other words...if you breed a black dog with a white dog...you'll have mostly black pups...although some will have some white spots (usually on their feet).

I hope that helps:)

Funny you ask. I have done this. I had 4 pups. Two came out short haired and one came out long haired and one came out with long hair and funky curly.
You can get a fun mix. Try it. You never know what you are gonna get.
The one who came out with long curly hair was the spunkiest one. She was the cutest and my mom took her.
