My 4 year old Dalmatian has been acting sick lately, and I don't know what it is...it started a three days ago...she was coughing a lot and constantly licking the floor. Then, she started throwing up. I came home yesterday and she had eaten part of my hallway rug, which is not like her. Then I noticed that she's been itching her bum alot. She's a rather itchy dog (she chews her paws when they itch and her ears, also), so I don't think anything else of it if it happens every once in a while, but coupled with the throwing up and coughing, I'm wondering if it's something else. Worms, perhaps? If this is the case, do the over the counter de wormers work, or should I take her to the vet? My 7 month old husky was throwing up yesterday, too, but she was eating a lot of grass all day and that was all she threw up. What's going on in my house???

I am in the process of adopting an ADORABLE 11month old German Sheppard/Pitbull. I know a lot of people may be turned off by this and think its mean, but I have met the dog, and it honestly doesnt have a shred of aggresive behavoir, or any that would harm anything, its bark is truly worse then its bite. Are many mean dogs a product of their upbringing, or are some traits inherenit? Thanks. I am really looking forward to adopting this resuce dog and giving it a life it deserves. In fact, it is so friendly, they have it train with the kids who visit the shelter. Her name is Taffy and she is as cute as a button. Thanks

i read a question on here posted by someone asking why people consider their dogs part of the family. it got me thinking... i really do consider my dog an active part of my family. i am not silly enough to think she is my genetic child like this person was making out people think, but my dog is my little girl. i love her as part of my family and do not look at her and think "shes a dog, i own her". i do not believe i "own" her as such, i just believe she exists and i am lucky enough for her to be living with me. i hate the term "own" when it comes to pets. i hate to think that we can actually "own" another living thing.

just wanted to get some responses about peoples opinions on how much u consider your dog a part of ur family and not just a pet. also conflicting views if u wish, if u DO look at ur dog as just a pet. i am not here to judge anyone, this question just got me thinking about dog lovers. answer away, i cant wait to read other peoples views on this subject! =)

My dog has been pregnant for approximately 63 days and is behaving differently the last 24 hours. She did not eat much last night and none this morning. I know that this is a signal that the first stage of labor has begun. What bodily signals should I watch for? Because it is her first litter, I am afraid she might freak out and kill her first born; so I am trying to stay with her as much as possible today. Am I going overboard by staying by her side at all times?

Some guy wrote a letter to the editor complaining about people who pay so much attention to their dogs and spend money on them when there are charities that need help. Some people have written in to tell him that while they own dogs they also contribute to charities, etc and how dare he tell them what their hobbies should be. I'd like to write a short response of my own mentioning health benefits since no one has touched on that subject yet.

I had an enlighting convo this past summer with an ignorant dog owner. he had a beautiful mastif puppy and was talking to me and my boyfriend about one of our dogs he wanted to know his dog was going to get as big as ours. Then he proceeded to tell us how he was going to keep him chained in the back yard or basement so he dosnt get much contact with other people so he will be mean and also not feed his as much to be ornary... for those of you who think like that this "?" is for you.... say your the dog would you protect your owner that treats you as an equal feeds you all your meals and the ocasional treat hamburger of the 1$ menu..not recoming but i do it. lets you sleep in their bed hugs and kisses you when they come home or that owner"stranger"thats taking you from being tied up in the back yard all day then pushing you down the basment stairs into the dark to be their alone all night. I would protect my friend. hopefully this helps you as it helped him.For all of u uneducated ownrs

Hi All

I am about to make the ultimate dog food descion between either Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance or Eagle Pack Hollistic for my 8 week beagle puppy soon to arrive. I live in Australia so those are the only organic brands available.

So users of these products could you help me out ?
1. Which of the two are better ?
2. Which has better nutritional value ?
3. Which would be better for a growing puppy to adult hood ?
4. Which one do you recommended 100% as the best !
5. Which one has a better rate of palitability in dogs ?

Hope you can help my future beagle pup and me !

Thanks in advance !

From what I have read here on YA, I have determined that dogs can not be housebroken. As puppies, they jump on people, bite children, and whine all the time. They like to do damage by chewing up wires, cats, and even couches! So, instead of keeping them, people want to get rid of them since they "have no possitive qualities"!

But, then I see a question that states that dogs can be "trained"! What is this allusive training? What doesn't anyone else know about it? Is this just something that a "secret" society knows about and won't share with the rest of us?

TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!

Me and my girlfriend just got ourselves a 10 week old lab/collie mix girl and she's pretty smart and well behaved.

Unfortunately she hasn't been peeing outside very much. At the moment it's pretty darn cold outside (-25 celsius weather) and whenever we take her out she'll eat snow or just sit and shake from the cold.

We live in an appartment so we have a small front area that isn't heavily covered in snow and their is other dog pee/poo so I'm not sure if that's a reason for her not going either.

She does poop outside and when she does pee she goes only on the newspaper inside. We do reward her with treats when she does go potty outside.

Now my question is, am I confusing her by allowing her to pee on the paper inside. Should I do one or the other or both? Should I tell her it's bad to pee inside on the paper? She also kind of dribbles/pees whenever she wakes up and sees one of us. What should I do? And no I'm not rubbing her nose in it...

My fiance and I were considering getting a dog. He really wants a pit bull. I know that if raised incorrectly, they can be extremely dangerous. I also know that if raised correctly, they can be relatively friendly and safe. How safe are pit bulls? Anyone have any experiences raising or owning a pit bull?

What is the best breed of dogs for a 5 year old. We have agreed to let our 5 year old daughter get a dog for her birthday and have no idea on where to start narrowing down the types of breeds that are best suited for children. Ideally we are looking to get a small to mid sized dog.

Where's the best place to walk him?

My last dog was a border collie mix that I witnessed being thrown from a moving car when she was (best estimate) 3-4 months old. Without going into a long drawn out eulogy, she was the best dog I've ever had (I've had 14).

When she was 15, I euthanized her. She wasn't technically "sick", but she was blind, deaf and no longer even recognized me (or anyone else) by scent, and because of that she became afraid of everything and started biting out of that fear. It was absolutely one of the worst days of my life!

My problem is that I can't bring myself to get another dog. For five years I've been denying myself the companionship of a dog because I don't ever want to face that kind of loss again. I want another dog in my life but I'm afraid that either the new dog won't live up to Roxie, or if they DO...I'm going to lose them too. It's become irrational and not having a dog in my life is just not ME...How do I get past this?

Me and my girlfriend live in an appartment and just got ourselves a puppy two days ago. She's 10 weeks old and she's lab/border collie mix.

So far we've had not to many problems with her she doesn't bite and she does sit nice when asked. However when we go to bed. We have her leashed in the living room (in an area with her bed surrounded by news papers and her toys) she continues to whine. I've said NO and tell her to lie down in her bed , when she does lay down in her bed I then tell her good girl and pet her. Sometimes this works though other times as soon as I leave the room she's back up chewing up the paper and whining.

Can any one give me suggestions as me and my girlfriend can't be with her all the time and I don't want her making to much noise as we're in an appartment?

Two days ago I got an 8 month old puppy, he's very well behaved and so farhe's been great. The only problem is that when ever I leave his sight, he goes into a panic and whines and paces around. Even when someone else is around he acts this way. Does anyone have any advice on how I can stop this obsessive behavior?

We took my dog into the vet yesterday afternoon, had not eaten since the night before, no drinking, but he did pee for me in the morning. He had not looked quite as good as he could the past couple of weeks, but here in CA we've had some crazy weather.
The vet got results on everything except urine analysis, and was concerned about our dog' enzyme level, but it could have been due to dehydration (you could tell he was) and sent us to the animal ER for more hydration.
They have had him since last nioght... I guess he ate a little this morning, but his liver isn't going down.
Has anyone had this proble, and what could it be explaining? We aren't getting a lot of answers from the vet, who I think isn't sure why Beau has this problem?
