the only way to determine if it's an appropriate time to get another time is by asking yourself and your family. do yall feel that ur ready for another dog? do you feel ok abt the fact that ur dog passed away and u want another one now? ask urself and ur family if yall are ready. have a good discussion. you will get ur answer. if u think yall are ready, here's a good link to help u decide the breed if u already dont have one in mind:

I'm giving you the same answer I gave the person a few questions down: Each person grieves at a different pace. Some people are ready for a new dog the next day, some people want to wait years before getting a new dog, some people are never ready.

Give yourself the opportunity to fall in love with a new dog. Go to a shelter or humane society and visit the dogs there. If the right dog is there, you will know it. Saving a dog's life by rescuing it from "death row" at a shelter is a great way to honor your beloved dog's memory.

If you get there and it doesn't feel right, then you aren't ready. You want to give the new dog the best life possible, and if you aren't emotionally prepared for a dog at the time you adopt one, that won't happen. You may fall in love eventually, but you can't and shouldn't force yourself to get one if you aren't ready.

It's never to early to get a new dog, sometimes bringing a new puppy into your family can fill the empty hole in your family that you dog as left. You will also feel great by giving a new dog a good home.

that would be an individual decision. You obviously have a lot of love to give to a pet. Take a walk around your local humane society. See if there are any homeless dogs there. Our last dog was from there, and she was the best pet anyone could have. Besides, they give them shots, clean them up, get rid of unwanted little bugs living on them, etc. They also give them complete physicals so you know what you are getting when you get one. Those animals have been abandon without reason, and they all need a good family.
good luck to you.

If you're family is all ready for this drastic change. I guess its ok then. If you're the only one... think about it for a minute. And ask your self these questions: are you ready? Do you think this new dog will make you put it down? Let's say your other dog was named "Scruffy". Think about it. Will this dog replace Scruffy too much that you get miserable or hostile out of that misery?
I have gotten like that when I lost a good dog friend of mine.
If there's a big family, devastated that poor, little, Scruffy died, don't get one until your family has gotten over that stage. Ask them questions like Do you think you and the others are ready?
Do you think that the new dog will be like ol' Scruffy?
Will we put him down because of misery?
I think you're ready if all of these questions have been postively answers. Good luck

Your teacher should not have imposed her values on her students. I am a teachers (5th grade). The other night, one of my dogs got sick in the middle of the night. This has never happened before and I was quite worried about him. It was 2 am. I got up, cleaned up and then sat with him until I was sure he was okay. I brought him back to bed with me and read until he fell asleep. Another teacher told me I was crazy and should have just put him outside (in 30 degree weather!). Nope. My dogs are part of my family. My husband was appalled to think that someone would really put a sick dog out in the cold! So your teacher and this teacher would have quite a disagreement!

My dog lost his life back in November. He was like family to me! I was really sad afterwards, and am still wondering about getting a pet. I've thought about a cat. I think that you'll know when you are ready to get a pet. One year seems like plenty of time. Rescue an animal from a shelter, or something like that. Good luck!

My dog just passed away on Dec. 26th and I kind of struggled with whether to get a new dog or not. I did purchase a new little puppy and I think I made the right decision. She didn't replace him and I still miss him a great deal but it having her around gives me something to look forward to.

Your heart will tell you when the time is right. Do you get excited when you think about another dog. Do you love seeing little puppies and wish you ahd one too. Unless you want a purebred, visit the shelters and see what they have. Maybe one of the dogs there will steal your heart.
