My 4 year old Dalmatian has been acting sick lately, and I don't know what it is...it started a three days ago...she was coughing a lot and constantly licking the floor. Then, she started throwing up. I came home yesterday and she had eaten part of my hallway rug, which is not like her. Then I noticed that she's been itching her bum alot. She's a rather itchy dog (she chews her paws when they itch and her ears, also), so I don't think anything else of it if it happens every once in a while, but coupled with the throwing up and coughing, I'm wondering if it's something else. Worms, perhaps? If this is the case, do the over the counter de wormers work, or should I take her to the vet? My 7 month old husky was throwing up yesterday, too, but she was eating a lot of grass all day and that was all she threw up. What's going on in my house???

I've looked at her poop and I don't see any worms, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything...

I think you should take the dogs to the vet. I once gave a dog some over-the-counter dewormer and when I told my vet about it he said to never do that. There is stuff in there that is very bad for the dog.

the coughing could be bordetella (kennel cough) which can get serious but i don't necessarily think that would have anything to do with the rug chewing. the other posters are right about worms, usually you can see little rice looking things in the poop. either way, you should take you dog to the vet and have them checked and always keep your pets vacinated once a year for bordetella, parvo, rabies, distemper, etc., as well as give them heartgaurd (for heart worms) and front line (for fleas that can cause worm worms), or something similiar, once a month.

take the dogs to the vet. look at the gums, if they are white most likely she has worms. over the counter junk is not as good as the vets meds. they will also give her some vitamins. worms take alot out of the dog. that's what vitamins are for. you could put cig tobacco in the dog food. tobacco kills worms. good luck.
by the way flees can cause worms.
if poison, i have seen my girlfriends dad give their dog vodka. it kicked the poison out of the dog. just take the dog to a vet.

Yes you should go to the vet and take a stool sample with you ASAP. Also part of routine care is to take in a stool sample once or twice a year and also have a heartworm test done once a year, the vet will draw blood. There is alot more to the health of a dog than eating, pooping and peeing.

Are your dogs left alone OUTSIDE all day while you are gone?
Do they bark a lot? It sounds to me like you may have an
angry neighbor that gave them some kind of poison. OR
what kind of weeds do you have in your yard? Your dogs are
sick and need attention. Don't self-diagnose. OTC worm
medication could only make the problem worse.

my dog once had worms which we identified when we saw her poop
if its vomitting it may be something she is eating that doesnt go well with her system.. if the vomitting continues for more than 1 day i think you sld take her to a vet who can do a thorough blood test to find out what is exactly the problem..
you were saying ur other husky..eatin grass?? did ur dalmatian do that too? did u spray smting on ur grass? maybe it was pesticide or growth chemicals n such...

a lot of dogs do that. she might have gotten into something outside that made her sick. Also it dpends on how old she is for tearing up stuff. She might be teething. Also if you have a puppie or something that hasn't been house trained, the dal. might have ate the rug because she had a scent of another. there could be alot of resons for their behavior. you might just wanna ask. I doubt it's worms, because if a dog has worms, it normally loses it's appetite.

worms doesn't make a dog throw up. If he continue to do this, i think you should take him straight to the vet. he might be poison or some case of parvo, very dangerous. he might have also eating something bad, just let them eat some grass to help them digest whatever it is.

Look at his poop- if there are little rice-like segments or any abnormal things in there then it's worms. Also, if his poop has blood in it, it could be worms. Best bet is to take him to the vet!
