My dog has been pregnant for approximately 63 days and is behaving differently the last 24 hours. She did not eat much last night and none this morning. I know that this is a signal that the first stage of labor has begun. What bodily signals should I watch for? Because it is her first litter, I am afraid she might freak out and kill her first born; so I am trying to stay with her as much as possible today. Am I going overboard by staying by her side at all times?

It will walk you through everything you need to know. She is a Shih Tzu breeder, but all dogs go through the same thing. I can walk you through step by step, but it would take a long time to type everything. Good luck to you!!!

Place your expectant mom in a quite area and put her in a large pasteboard box lined with newspaper. When she starts having contractions she will start scratching and tearing up the newspaper. This will be the first signs of the contractions. After contractions begin, give her about 45 minutes to 1 hour and she should expell a pup.If not and she continues to push hard you may need to call a vet,as a pup may be blocked in birth canal and she will require a C-Section.If she expells a bag of fluid first then just leave her alone and a pup should come next.Just be sure after pup is born to remove the bag of fluid from its head,as it will drown within seconds if left on head and she starts cleaning backend first,Then let her finish cleaning the pup. When contractions begin ,you may notice her panting much more than usual also.Good luck with your new pups

She will be breathing heavily, restless, and looking for a good spot to have birth. She will not freak out and kill her first born.
Female dogs have a natural motherly instinct, and know exactly what to do. Don't interfere, let her do the work. She will take care of the newborn pups without your help. Just keep people away from the pups for the first 5 weeks. This might stress out the mother, if there is alot of commotion.

She could start having the pups within an hour, or early tomorrow morning. When she is about ready you will notice her panting heaving, nesting, being very restless, getting up moving around, laying back down, very uncomfortable. Have you taken her temp? If it is below 99, she should have them at least within the next 12-24 hr.

I have herd that you can give the mother a tea spoon of honey to lick when she is in labor and is tiring out. It will give her a sugar boost and hopefully give her some energy back. This was with a chihuahua and that breed normally have a hard time with births.

Will circle a lot and lick herself...try to leave her in a quiet spot, this will help her feel comfortable enough to deliver. If she's not comfortable she will try to hold off, this could be bad for her. Leave her alone for a little while. Good Luck!!!

She will pant like CRAZY and walk around looking for a cumffy place to lie down. When she gives birth make shure you are there to help the puppies if they are having trouble breathing or anything.

She should be building a nest out of papers too. Milk should have come in now also. They are suppose to be alittle restless just before giving birth.......good luck it should be soon.

No you aren't going overboard. Stay with her in case there are problems. She should deliver very soon.
