Me and my girlfriend just got ourselves a 10 week old lab/collie mix girl and she's pretty smart and well behaved.

Unfortunately she hasn't been peeing outside very much. At the moment it's pretty darn cold outside (-25 celsius weather) and whenever we take her out she'll eat snow or just sit and shake from the cold.

We live in an appartment so we have a small front area that isn't heavily covered in snow and their is other dog pee/poo so I'm not sure if that's a reason for her not going either.

She does poop outside and when she does pee she goes only on the newspaper inside. We do reward her with treats when she does go potty outside.

Now my question is, am I confusing her by allowing her to pee on the paper inside. Should I do one or the other or both? Should I tell her it's bad to pee inside on the paper? She also kind of dribbles/pees whenever she wakes up and sees one of us. What should I do? And no I'm not rubbing her nose in it...

Yes it confuses the puppy. Do one or the other not both. YOu may have to take her farther to find HER SPACE, before she will go outside regularly.

It can really confuse puppies when you try to train them that inside and outside are ok areas to eliminate....you're setting her up for failure! Puppies should be taken out every couple hours to see if they need to go potty and give many treats if she does go outside. Also, she won't know the difference between the newspapers she can go potty on and a magazine left on the floor by accident. She dribbles when she sees you because she's a baby and has an inadequate bladder at this point. Unless you catch her in the act of doing something bad, never punish her after the fact. If you do, she is just learning that you're not a good person to be around and will want to avoid you.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMRQ9

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

I think it is a bad ideal to paper train puppies inside b/c of Oder and if you get a male dog they will spray on everything in the house I have never trained a dog inside I have always put them out side to do their job and I don't have any problems with them using the bathroom in the house. I know some ppl who have done the samething you are doing and their dogs started to use the bathroom in the house all the time so now the dogs are outside dogs

well good for you for not rubbing her nose in it. i would get a crate and crate train her. the paper is just confusing her. you're saying it's ok to go inside, but on the paper, but we really would like if you went outside. dogs cannot fully rationalize this. and do you want later down the road to reach for the sport section on to find it's been pottied on? as for the dribbling some pups do this and usually will outgrow it. i know it's cold, but she'll be ok, just make sure you get her on a schedule so you know when she needs to go and she'll be more likely to potty outside. if you feel strongly she's just too cold, maybe get her a little sweater to wear outside. let her play but don't pay any attention to her until she's gone potty. once she does potty outside, keep praising her like you're doing and try to take her back to the same spot each time. good luck, it takes patience and consistancy.

Definately a bad idea to do both ways. Makes for a lot of work for you and confuses the heck out of your pup. Is it ok to go in the house or should I go outside? Be patient and get your dog to go out.

It is hard to train in the winter, but you have to be willing to spend the time outside with the pup. Be sure you praise her when she starts to go and then make a big deal out of it after. Don't use the winter time as an excuse not to get her the training you and she needs.

You r doing fine! I always have done both w/success. If it is cold outside get her a doggie sweater I don't think she shakes frm the cold but just shakes as a habit.Keep her away frm the doggie dew b/c parvo is passed by popo being so young she prob. not had that shot yet?If u r both out work errands etc. it is easier for u if pee & poop on paper. She may be dribbling as part of excitement & hopefully outgrow.

Q) Is it bad to paper train and outside train a puppy at the same time?
A) It's an unneccessary step that will only cause confusion to the puppy.

Why don't you just paper train her until the weather warms up a bit.

I wouldn't recommend it as you are CONFUSING the dog.

When in the house he needs to be constantly supervised even if you take him out NUMEROUS times (every 30 minutes).

I guarantee he won't go in his cage (and no this is not inhumane)

Praise the puppy every time he does his business outside. When you have a pup, you're not training him, he's training you. Try leaving a sample in the yard so that he knows where to go.

PERSISTENCE is the key and if you notice him walking around like he's looking to go put him out so that he gets into the habit of what he's suppose to do. (Winter can be a challenge)
