The best way to get a dog to adapt to a 5 year old is to start with a puppy about 6 months old. They will grow up together and form a friendship. The child should be taught to be gentle, kind and accept the responsibility of feeding and watering her new friend. Older dogs, brought into a new environment are sometimes set in their ways and unless they have been raised around children, can be quite cantankerous with youngsters. They may not like the idea of a child trying to play with them.
Do you want and inside or outside dog? A border Collie or Aussie makes a wonderful pet, protective of children and very lovable, but they need room to run and play. A small poodle cross or a scottish terrier can be kept indoors and will make a great pet. The secret to having a good dog for a pet, is to give it lots of love. They will give love back.

well good luck!!! and please go to the pound.
BTW one thing that you should probably do is wrap up a leash and collar for you daughter and then take her to the animal shelter or wherever your getting the dog from and let her pick out which dog she likes best. 5 year olds can be picky and you wouldn't want to get her a dog she doesn't want. before you buy the dog you should also ask the supplier if you can see where the dogs sleeps. if its dirty and untaken care of it could be a puppy mill and you definitely don't want a dog from there.

Out of the two dogs that you have chosen I would choose to get your son the Corgi. The Corgi is built to be more sturdy and compact compared to the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Though the Spaniel will probably be more dainty and pretty for your companion, for a child the more sturdy built Corgi would be better. The corgi can handle a child better, while if your son steps on the Spaniel wrong or drops her to high up she could get hurt. However, please do make sure your child understands the delicate nature of most small dogs. You should also consider getting him a Tibetan terrier. I met a corgi once. It lived in a home with a two and an eight year old. HOWEVER, Remember that no matter how study the corgi is built he still is prone to being injured if not taken care of by a child properly. Playing with large dogs and playing with small dogs is an entirely different experience for a child. Please make sure he understands that he must be gentle with the puppy, and not so rough with him as he develops into a dog.

It doesn't depend on the breed, it depends on the dog. We went looking for my son a puppy for his 5th birthday, he had his heart set on a pug, we left with a shitz shu. The dog that bonds with your child is the dog for her.

Beagles or labs. They are absolutely wonderful with children! Beagle's are just big kids themselves, they are the dog worlds clowns. And labs are so tolerant and patient. You can't really go wrong with either of these. (And you can find lots of them at local shelters....)
