Please reseach the breed and make sure you understand what is involved in owning not just a pitbull but any breed of dog. Do not believe all the negative hype that follows these dogs and before getting one make sure you make sure they are allowed in your city.

It all depends on how they are raised and how you treat them. They have a tendency to be dog aggressive but they were NOT bred to be human aggressive.
I had someone come over last night (friend of a friend) and she was telling me how someone else's pit bull had bitten her for what seemed like no reason. She was a little concerned about my dog with her being a pit bull too and all but after she met her, she admitted that my dog definately acted differently. I told her that most of the time, its the wrong kind of people attracted to the breed and that more than that, the dog just becomes and extension of their penis. She agreed that this person had that attitude. She had no problem loving on my pup.
I know this is a useless answer with no really good info, but I'm being pretty lazy right about now and will let others take on the responsibility of serving you up the good stuff.
Pit bulls ARE NOT for everyone by ANY means. But they can and more often than not make GREAT pets, even around kids. Great care needs to be taken in raising them.
Another thing to think about is that the media exaggerates pit bull attacks. Often, what is labeled as a pit bull is really a boxer or a mastiff or even a straight up MUTT. Lol! The media's job is to hype things up to increase ratings. If your neighbor's chihuahua tore into some kid, the press wouldn't find much to say about it because it's such a little dog and little dogs don't instill fear in people. Also, with the media hyping up all these negative things about pit bulls, it is only aiding in the "glamorization" of owning a pit bull. Again, an extension of one's penis.

The problem is not with the Pit Bulls, the problem is the owners of the Pit Bulls. If any dog, is raised to be aggressive, not just Pit Bulls, then that's all the dog, knows to do. If the dog is raised properly, in a good loving home, by responsible owners, then it will behave properly with no problems. The outcome of the dog's behavior, depends on the owner.

Any dog that is abused has the potential to turn on their owners or anyone else.
My brothers raise pit bulls. They are great with little kids. Very protective. However, they can be high maintenance. They're smart dogs and need lots of exercise and stimulation.
If you need help with training your dog, check your area for dog training classes. Good luck.

If you have ANY question in your mind whatsoever this may not be the type of dog for you. I'm not saying that they turn on their owners, but could you ever really trust one if you already have doubts?
Pits are a good choice for those who know what they're doing when it comes to proper training and controlling your dog. This is not a breed for everyone.

I have never met a pit bull that turned on it's owners. I work at a vet clinic, and i used to volunteer at an animal shelter. I have only met sweet pit bulls. Pit bulls were bred specifically to NOT bite humans. If you do research you will find that. Pit bulls are my favorite breed. So many pit bulls come in to our clinic that are the sweetest animals you will ever meet. They are friendly loving and loyal. When properly raised and trained, and with the right family they can make the best pet.
A bad dog is due to a bad owner. Owners who either train their dog to be agressive, don't trian their dog at all, abuse their dog, or excuse bad behavior such as growling and biting. Any dog can be dangerous if Not raised properly. Just as any dog can be an excellent dog if raised properly.
I want to add that Lundie G is an example of someone who shouldn't have had a pit bull. If you notice a change in your pit bulls behavior, you correct it. If a dog bites once, you immediately try to change this. Not allow it to be around 12 year olds, then keep it in quarentine in your own house, and allow people to come in when you know it bites. As puppies pit bulls NEED to know boundries. No growling, snapping, nipping as puppies, and absolutely no biting. If you let these things slip just because you love your dog, then your dog WILL bite. She knew this dog was agressive and neglected to try to change this behavior because she 'cared' so much about her dog. This dog was not abused or treated badly, but it's bad behavior was excused, so it happened again, and again. This would happen with any breed of dog. But with pit bulls it is more important to get them in obedience so you know how to teach them that biting, playing with their mouth, and nipping are not acceptable, Ever.

Personally, I really like pitbulls and agree that how they are raised makes a huge difference. ANY dog can bite given circumstances or conditions. Get your dog from a good breeder and check the temperment of any puppy you intend to purchase.
