I have a 3 and a 1/2 month old pug who eats her own poop. She has done this since we had her unless pulled away from the poop immediatley. What can be done to stop this behavior?

Most vets sell either FOR-BID or DETER. I have had great success with FOR-BID.

Charcoal biscuits will help with bad breath, but won't do much if anything to stop her from eating feces.

You can buy the FOR-BID on www.1800petmeds.com also. Comes in a bag of 12 packets.

This is how we got our female to stop doing it:
1/2 a packet sprinkled over her food twice a day 4-5 days, then I backed it off to 1/2 a packet once a day for 4-5 days. The remaining 2-4 packets can be spread out 1/2 a packet every other day.

There is also "ACCENT" in the spice isle of the grocery store. I've never used it, but have hear others have.

Not very effective at all, however their breath will smell cleaner.

Dogs eating feces is an attempt at getting the remaining neutriants out of the "food", they will also eat horse poop and pretty much every other animal poop out there. Some people beleive that the dogs do this to suppliment vitamins or minerals they are lacking (enzymes and amino acids proabably)..

While this is a "gross" behavior, it is pretty benign.. best bet, let dog out, do buisness, clean it up.. and dont let em lick your face.

If your are really worried about it, call up the local vet, they can usually answer over the phone some ideas they have. you might also have the dog taken in to be checked if it is extreeme as they wont eat food but goes after feces.

Best bet overall is train her on manners.. have her on lead, when she tries to munch, a quick tug and a loud no. maybe a water bottle to "scare" her from the poop on the ground.

MSG is an idea someone else gave, I would not recommend it, it can cause neurological damage to animals that are sensitive to it, just like in humans. but dogs are much smaller body weight...

I haven't heard of charcoal biscuits but what has always worked for me is Meat Tenderizer. You get this from the grocery store in the spice section. Put it on your dogs food to keep her from eating her poop.

I once had a dog that ate my other dogs poop, she was on a special diet and wanted their food, used to not. She was my first and favorite dog, and it really grossed me out. My vet had me put monosodium glutimate on the other dogs food, it made their poop less appealing to her.

Try using a training regime of the following: Put MSG (get it at the market in the spice aisle) on the dogs food, and when it's time to got out and poop take it on a leash. As soon as the dog is done, give it a treat and engage it in play (to distract if from the poop). Do this for long enough for the dog to get out of the habit of eating it's poop, then try backing off the treats and games, then eventually take the MSG element out of it.

Hope this helps.

i had this problem and spoke to my vet about it, and he said to get a seasoning salt that contains MSG. just sprinkle it on your dogs food and it has some sort of effect that makes poop not as appetizing. i tried it, and my dog does not eat his poop any more. don't worry, MSG is not bad for your dog.

the hot sauce answer is excellent advice. dogs eating feces isn't irregular but some breads will do it more often that others.

The only thing I have found to work is putting hot sauce directly on the poop. Most vets will recommend this method. Once she has tried the hot sauce she will think twice from doing it again.
