Hi All
I am about to make the ultimate dog food descion between either Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance or Eagle Pack Hollistic for my 8 week beagle puppy soon to arrive. I live in Australia so those are the only organic brands available.
So users of these products could you help me out ?
1. Which of the two are better ?
2. Which has better nutritional value ?
3. Which would be better for a growing puppy to adult hood ?
4. Which one do you recommended 100% as the best !
5. Which one has a better rate of palitability in dogs ?
Hope you can help my future beagle pup and me !
Thanks in advance !

Hi
I have asked a vet and she said that switching between diets could upset a pups stomach.
Also all life stages food is ok right ? It meets the nutrituional needs of a dog from puppyhood to senior years ?

I used Natural Balance for years. It is hard to get in my area, and I have just switched to Solid Gold.
I was more than happy with the Natural Balance. My dog has a laundry list of food allergies, and used to have the WORST skin/coat. The N.B. took care of that.
They have several formulas to choose from. My dog did not care for the Duck & Potato, but loved the Venison & Brown Rice.
Dogs in the wild do not have puppy/adult/senior foods. They eat what they eat. I do not have any issues with a life stages food.

They're both very respectable high quality foods... you're going to just have to bite the bullet and make a choice. It's going to come down to which one *your* dog prefers and which one *your* dog does better on. There is just no such thing as the one best food. Lots of crappy options, yes, but once you're into the good quality stuff, it's more about whether that one suits the dog.
I do note that Natural Balance had a raw formula as well, and I can certainly recommend raw diet as a very good way to go. However, this can be done MUCH cheaper by buying your own meat and shopping sales. We actually pay a lot less buying whole chickens and entire pork shoulders and whole fish for the dogs than we were even paying for premium kibble... just requires a freezer.

Good for you for being so conscious about feeding well! It sure does pay off in the long run. Good luck with your new puppy!

Is there a reason you are choosing one over the other? I use two or three types of high quality organic food and give him a different one for each meal. He loves the variety, and I strongly feel that the benefits outweigh the negatives. No one food can offer everything a dog needs, and alternating food gives him different types of proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins, fruits/veggies, etc. His coat is immaculate - soft and shiny in a breed that typically isn't known for their beautiful coats - his teeth are sparkling white, he has firm, decent smelling poop, he's growing at the right rate, and most importantly he loves it.
However, some believe that exposing a dog to multiple types of protein can increase the possibility of the dog getting food allergies, but I have not found that to be the case in my personal experience.
Both brands you mention are consistently listed among the top brands, so it really comes down to personal preference and what your dog does best on if you choose to go with one food.

I feed mine Natural Balance Ultra Premium Dry and I am very happy with the results (teeth, shiny coats, no more dandruff, less crap in my yard, and they eat less, so even though it's more expensive then the crap food I'm paying about the same as I would feeding the crap food). I'm not familiar with Eagle Pack, but I'll read up and get back to you with my thoughts.
ADDED...Looks like a pretty good food to me. I'm attaching a link that shows a comparison of the ingredients of each. You can click on each ingredient to read more about them too. Great website....

ADDED (again) I feed mine all life stages. As I stated before I am very happy with Natural Balance.

The bottom line is what are the ingredients in each of these foods. Dog food should not contain corn, wheat, soya, sugar, salt, animal by-products, beet pulp or any type of fillers. My 2 dogs are on Natural Balance, as I have reserched many types of dog foods, and I found this one to be the premium brand of dog foods overall. Owners should read the labels on the dog food bags, and make a wise choice for their dogs.

i've used natural balance for a while with my dog and was very pleased with the results. i've never heard of the other but it is possible that it isn't available in the US. i will say that i use IAMS now as it isn't as expensive and i don't notice any difference between IAMS and natural balance or science diet.
