when my dog's sleeping, and i accidentally make a noise or something, he opens one of his eyes, but it's looking the other way!! :S is this normal?
it's looking in a direction it shouldnt be supposed to!
or is this just something that all dogs do just to stay alert while asleep?

The manager at our pet store told me that raw hide is bad for dogs and that I should never give my puppy any bones with raw hide. I havent given her any since. Is it true that its really bad?

i was trying to find an australian shepherd (aussie) adoption agency somewhere here in NC (USA). i was trying to get one for my boyfrined as a suprise for christmas, he used to own one but she died 2 years ago and he hasn't stopped talking about them ever since. we know all about the breed and we have time to take care of one, we just dont have enough time for a puppy. When my dog gets excited (playwise) she always rubs her *** across the carpet and then goes back and sniffs and licks the area on the rug. Why is this? Does this have to do with anal glands and phermones?

She is terrified of the sudden loud pops and hisses that my 1920's floor furnace makes, so I rarely turn it on, and we both freeze! She has the standard fear of fireworks, but is also terrified of other noises such as a smoke detector beeping, and any noise coming out of my computer speakers (but unafraid of TV or stereo noise). I am most concerned about her fears of the heater. She seems to be a German shephard/yellow lab mix.

My one dog always leaves the room where I am at and goes to the bathroom. I know the best think to do is to correct it by catching him in the act. However I can't follow him everywhere every time he leaves the room. Its a 2 story house. Is the best thing to do to keep a baby gate to prevent him from going into other rooms so I can keep an eye on him? and than eventually after he learns to go to the bathroom outside than he will stop doing it in the house?

This story is from the Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier by Jacqueline O'Neil. Weela was also featured in the October, 1996 Outside magazine as an example of the kind of dog one would like to have in a life-threatening situation.

Gary Watkins, eleven years old, was absorbed in chasing lizards when Weela, the family Pit Bull, plowed into him with a body slam that sent him sprawling. Gary's mother, Lori, saw the whole incident and remembers being surprised at first, because Weela always played kindly with children. But her surprise quickly turned to horror when she saw a rattlesnake sink its fangs into Weela's face. Somehow Weela had sensed the snake's presence from across the yard and rushed to push Gary out of strinking range.

Luckily for thirty people, twenty-nine dogs, thirteen horses and a cat, Weela recovered from the snake's venom. Luckily, because that's how many lives she saved a few years later. For her heroism, Weela was named Ken-L Ration's Dog Hero of the Year in

I have two beagles. One is 4 (male), one is 3 (female). For the most part they are very good about no accidents in the house but recently my male beagle has been peeing in the house within a short period of time from the last time we've gone out. I have one door to enter/exit my condo and no fenced yard (I have to walk them). And any advice about getting them to do their "business" quickly would be appreciated too. Especially now that it's so freakin' cold outside.

I'm looking for some good dignified names for a male Chihuahua - He's a very good dog, not a tempermental dog, extra small and white with some spots. My mom saved him from a miserable life and now he will be treated like a little prince (I don't like the name prince, though).

I had my dog neutered about 3 days ago and he was placed on antibiotics twice a day. The surgical site is very red/swollen and he will not allow anyone to examine the area. He also is not eating or drinking water, whimpers throughout the day, and will not get up and walk around. Will this resolve or do I need to bring him back to the vet?

Every time we call my dog to us, either for a treat or to be patted , or anything for that matter, she slinks along and piddles on the floor? Why is she doing this and how can it be prevented.

I am looking to get a puppy but not sure of the most ideal breed I should get that will be compatible with my lifestyle! Basically I need a dog that is happy to spend long hours of the day on his own as i am a uni student and a few days of the week i spend most of the day at uni (obviously when i first get him I will not leave him alone for so long). I also want a dog that does not need tons of exercise. Ideally a dog that would be happy to be taken for walks 2 or 3 times a day for half an hour each time would be suitable for me! And also I would prefer a breed that is not prone to illnesses/disabilities as I don't want to be frequently taking him to the vet. For example I know that dalmations are prone to obesity so i wouldn't want that breed of dog. I am thinking that I would want to get a cross-breed dog, but I can't seem to find any websites that have mutts for sale! Does anyone know of any sites that has mutts for sale?

My bassett hound pup is six months old. It was freezing today and he had to stay indoors while I was at work. came home and found that he had chewed up the leg of the chair to my $800.00 secretary(desk) in my living room. I love the dog and we are finally coming to a point where we are beginning to live harmoniously together. Anyone have any suggestions that will help me stop him from chewing on the furniture? Killing him is not an option!!!LOL!!! Seriously I need help here any ideas? Bitter apple does not work.

I need suggestions on keeping my 8 month old puppy happy when the wife and I want to shut the door to the bedroom. He usually sleeps in bed with us, and otherwise is very well behaved. While we work he stays in a crate. If we crate him while in the house he won't stop crying. He will roam the house while we run short errands (1-2 hours) with no trouble (chewing, accidents) but if we leave him out he'll scratch at the door and cry. I've tried giving him busy bones, but I worry that they are too much food for him. He's only 20 pounds and he'll eat a whole one if I let him. I just worry that's an excessive amount of food for a puppy with his usual dinner. Harder chew treats like pig ears don't hold his attention long enough though. Any suggestions?

she doesn't really like them. but she hates the snow too. we just moved from georgia where it is fairly nice weather year round. i know when i do have her in her shoes she seems to want to play in the snow but when i don't have her shoes on she is ready to go inside with a quickness. i have seen people walk their dogs in the snow with no shoes so i wanted to know if you think a dogs feet feel severe cold or heat? i know i wouldn't walk in the snow with no shoes on and i don't want my dog to either.

My puppy just got hit by a car, don't get mad please. It was just one of those wrong places at the wrong time. She's got a small cut above her eye, does this need surgery? Does she need a visit to the vet? Thanks for all your help.

The vet said to give my beagle cough medicine twice a day. I have tried a syringe and a dropper but the dog really hates this. Has anyone mixed it with something where the dog will just drink it?

i have a chinchilla (for those who don't know, it a rodent. like a squarrel and a mouse mixed, i guess.) i resently got a rat terrier. he has gone up to my chinchillas cage about twice, and followed me while i carried him just once, but i think thats because hes curious.

i know its stereotypical of the breed, but do i need to be concerned with the 2 of them in one household?
