My one dog always leaves the room where I am at and goes to the bathroom. I know the best think to do is to correct it by catching him in the act. However I can't follow him everywhere every time he leaves the room. Its a 2 story house. Is the best thing to do to keep a baby gate to prevent him from going into other rooms so I can keep an eye on him? and than eventually after he learns to go to the bathroom outside than he will stop doing it in the house?

Im not in the bedroom when he leaves. I am in the living room and not every room has a door to help keep him out.

when it comes to toilet training a dog, it depends on the age. this is what i would recommend, i trained my dog it took me 3 days for him to get the idea. but it does take patience. and a leash. keep the leash on him while he is in the house and make him stay with you, if he tries to go in the house, use the tone of your voice, kinda like a growling no. dogs are very smart and very sensitive to tones and nuances in your voice. every time you have him on leash and go from one room to another, take him out side, if you have a fenced yard, take him off leash and let him run around, when he does what he's supposed to, get excited and praise him. just petting, no treats.
it will be a tedious process but it will get easier. after 3 days there should be some improvements.
be sure to put him back on leash when your still training tho.

No you don't have to follow the dog but you do need to watch him constantly while indoors to break his habit of going indoors. Attach a 5-6 foot leash to a body harness to your dog and the other end to your waistband whenever the dog is in the house. Whenever the dog starts doing it's ritual signaling it needs to go walk the dog immediately to the correct potty area, treat and praise when it goes where it's supposed to. If you can't have the dog attached to you than crate the dog for that time period. If you're not willing to do either than get the dog a home that will have the patience to train it correctly or get used to the dog going potty in the house. Housebreaking requires patience, consistency, and vigilance.

yes put up baby gates so he can't get to other rooms
also look for signals that your dogs might have! like if he is pacing around and glancing at you he probably needs to go out...so then when u see that you should take him out right away! and also if he goes up to the door...my dog stands on the mat that is infront of my door and looks at me when he has to go out...but u hav to act quick! if u ignore him and say oh let me just finish this email...then u will forget and he won't be patient and will trot off to a warm place to do his business. also, sometimes dogs do this by purpose because they aren't happy with you...maybe you left them for a whole day and went someplace and then didn't play w/ him when you came home or something like that...then he will be mad at you and knows that you don't like it when he leaves "presents" in other rooms...so he will go do it! u must be careful with puppies...goodluck training him!
oh and yes once he learns to go outside he will not usually do it in the house unless he is mad at u like i said...
and just make sure for now that you know where he is at ALL times...if you noticed that he was near you a few seconds ago and u look up and suddenly he's gone and you don't hear him barking out the window and some dude on a bike, then go find him and see what he's up to!

My dog used to do that. You just have to create his own schedule. A good way to teach it is to put newspapers in the bathroom (his favorite spot) and put newspapers outside. Every time you go outside you show it where he should do his business and if he does it, give him a treat and say good boy. Slowly you remove the newspapers from inside as you see he is progressing outside.

Get some puppy pads, wipe up some of his pee with one and lay it down. Show it to your dog and he will soon get the idea that is where he needs to go potty. Once hes mastered going on the pad, slowly inch it closer and closer to the door with a fresh pad each time. Eventually, move it outside and he will soon get the idea. Worked for my dog. Good luck on yours...

i am going thru the same thing. my puppy doesnt bark, so she is not speaking to tell me. i take her out about every 2 hrs, right as she gets up in the am, about 10-20 minutes after she eats. when she is crated while we are out, she doesnt go in the crate, then i take her out immediately after we get home. i have notice that when she just gets up and runs, she is usually going to find a spot. she has gotten much better as she gets older too. now, it seems like when she has to go out, she stands sideways and looks at me. i say outside to her, she will run towards the door and stand so i can leash her up. then, when she goes pee pee outside, i say pee pee outside, good girl, and i smile and get all excited, and give her a treat. same for the other deal...so, when she looks at me and seems to be beckoning me to the door, i say outside? and she will go to the door now..
a good site is http://www.leerburg.com/ also, lots of good information..
good luck, it takes patience and learning to communicate with your puppy..
