I had my dog neutered about 3 days ago and he was placed on antibiotics twice a day. The surgical site is very red/swollen and he will not allow anyone to examine the area. He also is not eating or drinking water, whimpers throughout the day, and will not get up and walk around. Will this resolve or do I need to bring him back to the vet?

This is not normal and he should go back to the vet. In most cases dogs are up and around the next day. Occasionally if a dog is licking the site they can cause irritation and swelling- if he is doing this he will need to wear a lovely radar dish for several days. Sometimes in adult dogs or dogs with larger testicles- the sac will swell and fill with fluid.- this is because there is so much extra space left over and he may need a change in antibiotics and possibly a little hydratherapy to stimulate healing. A suture reaction is also common- this is when your dogs body reacts negatively to the dissolvable sutures. If he is not eating and drinking he probably has a fever as well. There really isnt much you can do for him without knowing the specific cause. Take him back to the vet in the morning and they will be able to get him feeling better. Poor guy- Its sounds like he is feeling pretty bad. I hope that they gave you some pain meds as well. If not they will definitely give him some in the morning. Good luck. I hope he feels better soon.

I have been in the Veterinary field for over 20 years, and yes, you do need to take him back to the vet. A castration is a very painful and sometimes removal of the testicles will cause the scrotum to swell and become very bruised. Even though the scrotum is not cut into for a neuter it is still traumatic for it. It can become so swollen that the scrotum will seep and have discharge from the swelling. And if you are giving anti-biotics while your dog is not eating that can cause stomach upset and occasionally vomiting and make him not want to eat as well. The Vet will probably recommend hydrotherapy on the scrotal area. It is still a very common side-effect from being neutered, and don't be to alarmed unless you do not take him to the Vet. I wouldn't wait any longer, call and make an appointment first thing during normal business hours.

Since its been 3 days I would think he should be eating or at the very least drinking by now. I would definitely call the vet as soon as possible as he may have developed some complications. Not to scare you, but my dog slept and was groggy for about 24 hours after - then he started drinking water the second day and ate a little bit from my hand the end of the second day. His swelling started to go down by the 3rd day - and he was not whimpering during that time as you say yours is. See your vet.

No it's not normal to have complications. If you haven't taken him back to the vet since the surgery how is it he got on antibotics already?? Anyway...take him back if he was last seen by a vet before these symptoms came on. He needs some medical attention and can be advised also about what to give him that will be okay on his stomach and keep him energized while fighting the infection.

Definitely take him back to the Vet. He is in a lot of pain and it will very likely get worse without necessary treatment. Most male dogs that get neutered don't have this sort of complication.

Nope, this is not typical.

The lack of appetite is probably from the medicine. But the wimpering and refusal to let anyone look at it is because he is in pain, and he shouldn't be in that much pain after 3 days. It should NOT be red and swollen.

Definately take him back to the vet. And if you aren't 100% confident in your vet's ability, take him to another vet. I know from experience that some vets aren't very good.

Take him to the vet, he may have an infection from a type of bacteria resistant to the antibiotic (especially if it is Amoxicillin or Penicillin). Also, it the dog has been licking or scratching the area, he may need to get a Elizabethan collar to keep him from licking. Licking can also cause irritation back there.

There is always a possibilitly of complications. It sounds like he may be licking at the incision. I would contact our vet if your dog does not start eating a drinking. Your pet could become dehydrated. Your dog may need some pain medication also.

I believe you should follow up with your vet. I recently had my dog neutered and we did not experience any of the problems you are going through. In fact he was up and playing the next day.
I hope all goes well for your dog.

You should of gotten a care sheet for post-op....one of the things on there, is to contact the vet if the area gets red and/or swollen.
