My bassett hound pup is six months old. It was freezing today and he had to stay indoors while I was at work. came home and found that he had chewed up the leg of the chair to my $800.00 secretary(desk) in my living room. I love the dog and we are finally coming to a point where we are beginning to live harmoniously together. Anyone have any suggestions that will help me stop him from chewing on the furniture? Killing him is not an option!!!LOL!!! Seriously I need help here any ideas? Bitter apple does not work.

All your ideas are great. I tried crating him and he absolutely won't have it. I guess I will have to seclude him in the laundry room while I am at work if he has to stay in all day. He hates that too though. As far as chew toys, this dog owns one or two of everything PetSmart has to offer.

i love basset hounds, good choice for a dog
with the chewing problem tho, try lemon juice, the sour taste should deter him, if that don't work you may have to buy a kennel or like an indoor fencing to limit his mischief makings, but if you do try this be sure to have a variety of toys and chewables to keep him from being too bored. the idea is to keep his interest on his toys and things that he can chew on til he gets a little more forgetful of things that he can't.

Puppies go through teething just like human babes. You really should confine the dog to a crate when you can't keep an eye on him. Get him a couple of dog toys to chew on. When you catch him chewing on something inappropriate, tell him firmly, NO then give him an appropriate chew toy. He will soon learn what he can and can not chew on.
A great stress reliever are toys called, Kongs. You can stuff them with peanut butter. The dogs have to chew and work on the toy for a good while in order to work out the peanut butter. It gives them something to do.
Best to you and your dog. Sorry about your good furniture.

simple, get a crate. dogs naturally live in that type of environment and adapt well to it. When you leave, doggie goes in. You come home, he goes out and goes pee. You are home in a mess free, nothing chewed on house. Life is much better. Been doing this for the past 6 years with my 3 dogs. Spend the $50 or so bucks and get a crate, you will save yourself at least that much in headache medicine in the long run.

Consider crate training him and keeping him crated while he goes through his teething phase when he's home alone. Or he can be kept outside with a dog house and heater (doggie designed not a human one). Or only give him limited access to part of the house that has fewer things to chew on and give him lots of appriopriate chew toys and make sure he's been exercised well before you leave him alone.

Sounds like he is teething if he is only 6 months old. Get him a rawhide bone to chew on. My lab chewed everything..especially outside the house. His favorite chew toy was this big rock! And he put gnaw marks in it.
Good luck!

well seeing how he is a pup. bitter sprays wont work because his taste and smell isnt completely developed. so just find a good toy to give him, or, buy a medium sized cage for your dog to stay in while you are out. we did this with our pup because she did the same thing. if the problem happens as it gets older then use the spray.

do you have an area that you can enclose him in while you are gone. you can leave toys and food in this blocked off section of your house and make sure you have nothing he/she can chew up!
