Well first off there is no such thing as a "teacup" dog, its just a catch-phrase to market sickly (mentally and physically), poorly bred dogs to an unsuspecting public for a high amount of money.

Either go to your local shelter and look at the small dogs they have, or if you want to buy a purebred from a breeder...

Go to www.akc.org and contact a toy dog club in your area. They will be able to help much more than anyone at yahoo!answers. They will interrogate you about why you want a dog, the area the dog will be living in, the time you have to spend with the dog, and help recommend a breed and also a few breeders. Only buy dogs from a reputable breeder that registers dogs and shows them, and ideally, the dogs bred should all be from champion parents.

Don't worry about how much you spend (a pet quality pup from a reputable breed should be around $300-$800), you will spend at least that on the dog in the first year alone.

Most toy breeds DO NOT work well with kids. There may be an exception occassionally. I would suggest a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They are small usually less than 35 pounds, and widely known as the nanny dog. In the top ten #7 in England from where they originated. Check out my yahoo 360 & site to learn more. They are great. By the way, I have a 2 year old baby!

If you go with a teacup, this may not be a good choice for your child, because they really don't understand how not to be rough, or aggressive toward an animal. If that happens your son may hurt the puppy or vice versa if the puppy gets too scared.

I used to breed Shih Tzus and they are a very good family dog. I stopped because I became very ill. They usually only get between 9-14 pounds, depending on how long they are. They are loving and used to be used in China as watch dogs. You have a large variety od dogs to choose from, but make sure you pick the correct kind that will fit yor family and not because they are cute. A dog is like having another child, feeding, bathing, going out to pee/training to pee outside, training in general. I am not trying to scare you, just to remind you its not all fun and games. As long as you are consistent with the dog every day it will be easy for you to train.

Ok, now how to pick a breed...Here is a list of dogs in size order and it tells you how they are with kids. Check it out. It is a great site.

I have 2 children and 1 is Autistic. I have a pure bred Shih Tzu and a Pomerainian mixed with a Sheltie...She is a great dog and I got her at the pound. It is a hard decision to make but just think it through!!

Good luck!

Teacup doesn't exist- it's just a fancy word breeders use to sell runts in a toy litter.

Thank you for considering your lifestyle and your family before getting a dog!!!!

One breed I know that is good with children, but it's nowhere near toy-size... Labradors- they have a wonderfully high pain tolerance (they'll tolerate a lot of "abuse" from loving children), they are very even tempered (won't lash out), and they're mellow (lay around all day and let the kids tug on his ears/tail).

Poodles are also great- smart, gentle, easy to train... drawback- grooming... but they do come in toy...

But where you want a smaller breed... I'd suggest hitting your local library. Get a book like the Dog Breed Bible or 1001 Dog Breeds.... tells you about a lot of different breeds. You clearly want one that you'll be able to trust around your son, that doesn't take up a lot of space...
What about exercize and activity level? Do you want a dog that is low energy or a terrier that will need to walk for a mile every day?...
Grooming? Short-haired breeds don't need as much brushing as long-hair... What about clipping- Poodles, ShiTsus, Pekeneses, etc need clipped on a regular basis or they'll get matted, and that can be painful for your dog.
Alergies? Does any of your family have sensitivities to animal dander? any friends who are alergic to dogs? There are some breeds that are less likely to cause reactions- Poodles are popular in a mix for this very reason!

Another source would be a local vet or animal trainer. They'll both have info on unique characteristics of local breeds.

Again, thanks so much for thinking about this decision before racing off and getting a dog!

First there is no such dog as a teacup. It is a term used by the most unscrupulous breeders just to get more money out of your pocket and into theirs. Second, you should NOT get a small dog with a toddler. Third small breed dogs cost a lot of money. Wait until the child is about 5 or 6 and then get a medium sized dog. Hopefully one you rescue from the animal shelter.

I agree with the others -- you don't want a smallish dog around a child that small. Getting something in the border collie range will allow the dog the chance to deal with the kid and you'll end up with a more intelligent dog.

Insofar as a specific breed, you may be better off getting a mixed breed or even a mongrel (in the sense of multiple breeds). Hybrids tend to be more stable mentally and emotionally.

As far as sources, deal with registered breeders or with reputable pet stores. It would be inadvisable to pick something up, say, at the local flea market. There have been too many news stories of puppy mill products being sold in such venues and dying too soon and too painfully for the dog and the people.

I have had many dogs in my life. The best and the most fun and cute and I could go on and on is a TOY FOX TERRIER. Get a female anything. The males are bad at lifting their leg to the corners of the bedspread or couch and etc. My next choice would be a BOSTON TERRIER. Good Luck !!
Merry Christmas and Pray for a Peaceful New Year !!

Go to a website like AKC and take a survey to find out what types of dogs suit your personality and life style. You can also read about behavior patterns, growth, adult size and weight and the amount of time you are gonna have to be willing to put into raising and nurturing the dog.

No breed of dog so small to be classified as teacup is good with children. They are so small and fragile that small children can easily injure them accidently.
