Diet is likely part of the problem. I don't know what you feed your dog but even with premium foods dogs often need supplements. My dogs get 3V Skin Caps from the Vet which have Omega 3, Vit A, D and E in them. I don't bathe them but once a month, twice if they get dirty and I use a good shampoo for their sort of skin and coat. Sometimes I use one I make myself that puts a shine in their coat.
My shampoo (amounts are for bathing three big dogs):
1 bottle guiness beer, extra stout
1 cup cooked 1minute oatmeal
1/4 cup aloe vera gel
1/4 cup tearless puppy shampoo
4 egg yolks, whites discarded
1 tablespoon Vitamin E Oil
I blend it in a blender right before I bathe them.
Rinse the dog, then apply shampoo. Massage it in for about five minutes. Let it sit a few more. Rinse well
Repeat if the dog is very dirty when you go to give it a bath..

i have a lab mix that had the same problem, it may be the kind of dry food that you use. i started out using Purina. then i switched over to pedigree. another little trick is to use a table spoon of cooking oil, not the bulk block stuff, but the liquid. the vets may recommend bacon fat or switching to an expensive diet. but i went to using Crisco. depending on your dog size, if its a small dog under 20 lbs, use a half a teaspoon over the dry food, between 20 and 45-50lbs, use a full teaspoon, over dry food daily. anything bigger would use about a tablespoon every second day over dry food.
his coat is like glass it shines nicely.
it takes about 3 weeks to notice a difference.

(First, try spell-check so we know what you're asking....)
NUTRITION
I start by feeding my dog an excellent quality dog food. Then on alternating weekends, I give her a hard boiled egg. I cut it up and let it cool so it doesn't burn her mouth and throat.
Eggs are an EXCELLENT source of protein which is vital to the building of the various tissues in the body (canine or human). In addition, there is a TON of nutrition in an egg- remember it has to have enough nutrition to build a whole baby chicken!
HYGIENE
1) Brushing- Depending on your dog's coat, you need to brush it daily for a long coat or for a double coat(Poodle, Shepherds, Chows, Labradors, etc), or weekly for a short coat (Dalmatians, Heelers, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc.)
2) Bath- Weekly for long or double-coated breeds, monthly for short-haired breeds. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS make sure you thouroughly rinse the shampoo out of the coat. Imagine if you didn't rinse out your hair completely... yep- itchy and dry! If you're not sure if it's rinsed enough, rinse it some more!

Try giving your dog browned ground lamb every few days. It has a lot of oil in it. My vet told us to do this when my dogs skin was so dry that the hair was falling out. Also, make sure he has plenty of water. If he doesn't drink a lot, give him ice cubes to eat. Most dogs love to play with them, and they will give him extra water.

Shanie?? Do you mean shiny? I agree with the first poster. A dull coat can be an indicator of poor diet as can excessive shedding.

make sure they have food that nourishes their skin and coat..
and also get moisturizing shampoo and conditioner...but don't bathe him too much! especially b/c it's winter it will dry his skin out more ...
so like just a couple times a month use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner for your dog when u give him a bath :-) it should help!

Try fish oil. My mother in-law was recommended that by her vet. Our dogs have beautiful coats and that is what I give to them.
