I'm getting to baby ducklings and I'm keeping them in a cage obviously, so my dogs will not bother them, but I am not sure what kind of bedding to use. I know they have very sensative feet. I have some aspen crumble bedding, and some gravel type stuff thats soft but firm.

What should I do? What are the chances of them doing ok. The female is taking good care of them. They were out of the nest and cool for a few hours.... Should I just take them out and let the pair start over again? BUMMED!

I have a 14 month old budgie that looks very ill. He doesn't clean his feathers and they look very dull. He has a big cage which we let him out of but he doesn't seem to want to go out. He has mirrors, lot's of good food and fresh water. I don't know whats wrong as he is eating but isn't himself. Does anyone else have a budgie that is like this, his name is chirpy, and is it normal?

Of course some birds fly south. But chickadees for instance, don't. And I know they sort of hibernate for a couple of weeks at a time if necessary. My question is this - what do they eat when they do eat? There are no seeds or berries or insects. There are no birdfeeders. Everything is covered with snow and frozen. Do they "eat" snow for water? I'm very curious as to what they actually eat when they do eat. Sometimes winter lasts five to six months with no growth or warmth.

I just got anoter parakeet a week ago (I already had 2), and I decided to try hand-training this one (the other two are together and not hand-trained), so I've kept him in a seperate cage. Usually when I'm working with him, I take him into a different room and he has no problem sitting on my finger and eating out my hand and letting me pet him and such, but if I try to pet him or anything when he can see the other two parakeets he won't let my hand get anywhere near him. He runs to the other side of the cage like he's afraid of me. I've got no problem always taking him into a different room, but I'm curious as to why he does this.
Oh, and he wasn't hand-trained or anything when I got him. He was in with a bunch of other parakeets at the shop I got him from. Maybe that has something to with it?

I've had them before, in fact, Snowball was my first bird, and she was awesome. I was wondering how much work they are becuase when I had Snowball, we kept her and three cockatiels in a really big cage and I never took care of her(I was about 6-8 years old, mom took care of the birds) so much as take her in the shower with me, bring her around the house, and watch TV with her.

So if I am gone for about four hours a day, will a parakeet get lonely? I really want a pretty little white parakeet again. I have a cat that loves to talk to my green cheek conure(they're great pals, they get along great, and its kinda weird lol) I was wondering if the interaction from the cat talking to the keet, would that make up for the 4 or so hours I would be gone?

I know that button quails are ground dwellers so they don't need a lot of room to fly. Can I use a guinnea pig cage maybe with board on the bottom or would the spaces be too big.

My tiel is about 5 months old and I have said "hello" to him very frequently since he was very small. He is mimicking the overall sound of hello but there is no distinct pronunciation of the word hello. Is this the limit of his capcity to mimc me or will the pronunciation get better if I keep repeating "hello"?

I woke up to a tipped over nest, and the eggs were not warm. Could have been upto 9 or 10 hours with out the mom sitting on them. Are they dead? How long does it take doves to hatch out?

All the Grey owners out there can you tell me if they are loud. I mean like Quaker loud?? I have read that they are quiet birds, but choose one person as their person, and are generally not nice to other members of the family. That is one reason we have decided against one.We have a five year old.

Thanks

He is relatively new, and has been mostly quiet. As he's getting used to his environment, he chirps occasionally. But for the past 2 days or so, I've heard him do this weird chirp....it's deeper than the normal 'happy' chirp and he does it a bunch of times in a row really fast. Kinda like BEEBEEBEEBEEBEEBEE. One time he just randomely did it when he was in his cage, and the other time it was when he was out, and I put loud music on. But until that day, he's always loved that music, so I don't understand why he'd suddenly get scared from it. Does this sound like an angry/scared chirp, or can it be just a chattery/energized one?

I read on a pigeon website that somebody got a fertile egg from a someone (by mail) it worked and the bird is now full grown. My friend in L.A. has 2 pigeons(they're NOT breeding right now), L.A. is about 4 to 5 hour drive from where I live... but...I wonder if I'd get the same results if we tried the same thing?

(The package was sent 1200 miles away from the sender's home, and L.A. is 200+ miles away from Vegas)
So...ya think it could work or should I just wait to pick up the egg on my next trip to L.A.?

(I might be going back down there sometime in June but I'm not quite sure just yet.) I've also done my research on incubation and hand raising got a few basic supplies on hand, already.
