I have a 14 month old budgie that looks very ill. He doesn't clean his feathers and they look very dull. He has a big cage which we let him out of but he doesn't seem to want to go out. He has mirrors, lot's of good food and fresh water. I don't know whats wrong as he is eating but isn't himself. Does anyone else have a budgie that is like this, his name is chirpy, and is it normal?

Is he squatting on the floor of the cage, all fluffed up? If so, you need to take him to an avian vet right away. Birds don't show they are sick until they are really sick, so time is of the essence with birds. If he is eating, pooping, sleeping and drinking normally, he might just be a very lonely Budgie. Budgies are flock birds and get super lonely and depressed by themselves. A plastic mirror is no substitue for a living, breathing, warm being he can communicate with. Please get him checked out by a vet TODAY if he is diplaying illness signs (lethargy, constant fluffed up feathers, staying on the bottom of the cage, changes in his droppings, not eating). Please get him a Budgie pal either way. He is lonely and deserves a friend. Just remember, when you get a new bird, keep the in sperate rooms for 30 days (called quarantine) to keep everone from getting sick. And wash your hands between handling them!! After the 30 days, put their cages beside eachother for a few weeks to get them use to eachother, then let them play outside of the cage togeather (supervised play!)for a week or so. If all goes well, put them togeather and have fun watching them bond. Good luck!

I agree with Heidi-11
any one that knows much about birds will know that a bird that don"t clean it"s self is very sick if the bird just started acting this way he probably has a avian disease which is very fatal to a bird with out treatment the bird will die pretty quick after about a week the bird will stop eating so it is very important that the bird see a vet if nothing else get a old pill bottle and put some of the birds fresh pop in it and take it to the vet tell them you want the birds pop checked for avian disease this usually don"t cost but about 10 dollars ,also don't keep the bird in a damp area like a wash room ,a damp room can cause a bird to get aspergillus which is a fungus of the lungs and respiratory system the symptoms are a bird that drinks alot of water they usually only drink very little water,if the bird gets exhausted it will breath very hard ,they will also sit fluffed up they will also leanforward do to the pain that it causes this infection is deadly birds up north are more likely to catch it a bird that is usually depressed will pull it"s feathers out .good luck

Get him a cage mate, or just spend time with him yourself. He's probably just bored because of lack of interaction.
I'm not sure if this is a problem, but I heard somewhere that mirrors are bad for a bird because they'll think there's another budgie in the cage and they don't want to bond with their owner enough.

Honestly, your bird NEEDS to see an avian vet. DO NOT get another bird until he has a clean bill of health!!!
He sounds sick to me. Feathers should NEVER look dull.

I didn't even finish reading this letter before start to write, if a bird looks even a little sick take them to a vet at once, bird are excellent deceivers, they have to use it in the wild to keep predators from getting them!
