I just got anoter parakeet a week ago (I already had 2), and I decided to try hand-training this one (the other two are together and not hand-trained), so I've kept him in a seperate cage. Usually when I'm working with him, I take him into a different room and he has no problem sitting on my finger and eating out my hand and letting me pet him and such, but if I try to pet him or anything when he can see the other two parakeets he won't let my hand get anywhere near him. He runs to the other side of the cage like he's afraid of me. I've got no problem always taking him into a different room, but I'm curious as to why he does this.
Oh, and he wasn't hand-trained or anything when I got him. He was in with a bunch of other parakeets at the shop I got him from. Maybe that has something to with it?

Give him some time. Parakeets generally do not liked to be handled. They will get on your finger or hand but do not liked to be held.

Dogs associate a mother's love with touch and licking, parakeets associate a mother's love with giving/ receiving food.

My parakeets have a strong sense of independence and self-will. they do what they want, when they want. Sometimes they want to get on my hand, other times they fly away squawking in horror.

Just give him time and love, good luck.

Hi there. Parakeets are flock birds and are very social. he will behave as the other birds in their presence to fit in with them. After all they are two of him. It's natural to want to be like the others. It's like when a teenager is a kind to a parent and turns into a different person with his peers; Enjoy your times together and have a tweet year.

Hi, I have the sae problem with my parakeets, and to tell you the truth, when they are together, they want to stay together, not be taken apart, so you trying to handle it infront of the rest is disturbing his environment, only do this if you plan on holding them all, but if the rest are not trained, your going to need much luck. I can only handle one(the green one) in a diffrent room, but try to do this with all of them, and one day, just maybe, they will feel comfortable all together with you.
