Our new love bird is 2.5 months old. It is very small and very quite. But, it seems like he can hardly breathe. A very weird sound is coming from his nose and he keeps on opening his beak to be able to breathe. What can i do? İs this something normal? please help me!

Experienced answers please :-)

It's not normal. Wheezing is a sign of sickness; as is tail-bobbing when he breathes, and usually when these signs surface, the bird is already quite sick. Don't feel bad, because birds hide their illness very well as a natural instinct, but now you know some of the many warning signals.

I agree that he should definitely see a vet. If you don't already have an avian vet for your bird, you can find the closest one to you on this site: http://aav.org/vet-lookup

If you can't get him to an avian vet right away, you may want to take him to your nearest emergency vet to hold him overnight or until you can get him to the avian vet. Failing that, if humidity tends to help breathing and he should be kept in a warm little hospital cage (preferably lined with a towel with a low perch, low food and water bowls, and if you can, place a hot water bottle under the towel. Make sure it's not too hot, and check it regularly so it doesn't get cold on him, and cover 3/4 sides of the cage, as well as the top, to try and hold the heat in).

Good luck.

Also, if Jess is right about the aspergillosis, here's a link about it that you should read while your bird's at the vet, or afterward. The vet is top priority! Basically, it states how the mold is spread, how parrots can get it, and that younger birds are more susceptible to it.

It sounds like a pathogen called aspergillus. It is a kind of fungus. Did you get him from a pet store where there were clean conditions? Aspergillus is VERY deadly to birds, I would get him to a vet right away and in oxygen as lack of oxygen for an animal that small will be deadly eventually.

You need to take him to a vet that specializies in birds. There's no other way to know what's really wrong with him.
