If you choose to participate in having a winter bird feeder, be sure to consistently do so because the birds will depend on it rather than the survival tactics they would normally employ. Birds can survive 2-3 weeks in stasis, kind of like hibernation, but more like minimal activity. Their biggest problem is water. Some of the fishing birds must eat every day and when the streams freeze you find them everywhere.

they fly south for the winter where it's warm!
