I am trying to copy all my files on my old HD to my new HD, and the new one already has Windows on it. I've tried using a well-known migrate/transfer utility, but it says the receiving disk (the new one) has to be formatted! There's no way I'm formatting it after all I've installed on it already. When I try to just open the old one under My Computer and copy and paste the contents, it gives me a stupid error msg. saying that disk is not formatted and do I want to format it. LOL Umm no, because if I do I lose everything on there & won't be able to transfer anything! Grrr this is getting very frustrating. :-)

I was given an old computer which I want to use as a backup computer.

It has two drives in it (diff. models), C drive is FAT32 formatted and has XP installed, and almost completely full (even without any programs). E drive is empty and larger, its NTFS formatted.

I want to migrate XP from C to E drive. Can you tell me which is the easiest way to do? I have little computer knowledge, and cannot reinstall XP since I have no XP on CD.

I have thought about doing this, will it work?

1. Install Norton Ghost or Acronis TrueImage onto C drive, image the entire C drive, and restore it onto the empty E drive.

2. Open the computer and physically switch the two drive cables.

3. Boot up the computer. If it works, then it means the previously E drive will be now the C drive.

I'm worried about two things though:
- The two drives are not identical models.
- The original XP was installed on FAT32, the new drive is NTFS.

Will this work? Do you have a better suggestion?

Thanks.

I heard before installing a motherboard into the case, I must first install some metal/plastic pedestal on the motherboard tray first, to prevent electricty flow thorugh the motherboard to the case. My question is where can I found these metal/platsic pedestal thing? Do they come with the case or with the motherboard?

I'm sure I heard that if you intend to go away for a short while then come back to the computer, the standby option is the best. Is this true? Or should we just never use standby ever?

When I boot my PC, the machine doesn't boot all the way until the desktop appears, it stops shortly after the Windows Welcome screen. However, I can use Ctl/Alt/Delete to open then Task Manager, and use Task Manager to open up my applications, and see my files etc. Because of this I don't think the hard drive is knackered.

Using task manager, it shows the 'CPU usage', and this is going up and down all the time from 0 to 100% - any ideas? Does this seem like the CPU is knackered? It's a Dell Dimension 2400
