I'm sure I heard that if you intend to go away for a short while then come back to the computer, the standby option is the best. Is this true? Or should we just never use standby ever?

80% of a PC's energy consumption is used by the monitor, so the best thing to do if you want the PC to carry on working is simply to turn the monitor off.
If you don't need the PC to be running, just shut it down.

It's more efficient to just keep your computer on or if you're going away for a long time, you just turn it off. In some cases letting your computer go standby would allow it to load up more quickly than when you turn it on again... but that's hardly a fact to be taken in consideration when it jacks up your computer a lot by doing so... you can do it at work since that's not yours :P, but I wouldn't recommend it at home.

With a desktop the savings are negligible. Maybe 10 Cents every 30 hours

I try to avoid using SB. The HD will live longer if you just keep it running.
