The DVD-R DVD+R difference can easily be summarised by the following:

The DVD-R/RW standard was developed by Pioneer, and is used primarily by Apple and Pioneer. These “minus” discs can only be written to in one layer on the discs surface. In addition, this format is supported by the DVD forum, but is in no way an industry standard. DVD-R/RW discs are cheaper than the “plus” format.
The DVD+R/RW format is supported by Philips, Dell, Sony, HP, and Microsoft. These discs can be written to in multiple layers, giving them slightly better and more disc storage than the “minus” format. Because of this additional capacity, they are slightly more expensive than “minus” discs.

For a kick off, the + and - thing is only for DVD's, so that gets the CD's dealt with.

Also, if your DVD drive can only take + or - discs, the difference is a rather academic.

+ DVD's are evidently a bit more reliable then the older - ones. Therefore, if the price is the same, get the + ones. However, if the - ones are cheaper, get them instead.

Ok, in short:

The only issue with these is DVD + RWs can only be written to by DVD + RW drives, and DVD - RWs can only be written to by DVD - RW drives. Kinda like VHS and BetaMax, they are the same thing, but not interchangable.

However, most new drives are coming out that are DVD ± RW, which means they can write to both.

So check out your machine, but I suspect you will be able to use both.

basically there are two formats which where created when the dvd era began, + and -.

in short it was like when hd-dvd and blu ray where announced, just something else for us to throw money at, two standards fighting the same battle as before but this time using different technology!

dvd-r is the more popular format. dvd+r needs to be formatted and only works with certain drives, older ones which used to only accept dvd+r's.
