That command is not available in Win XP.

Reformatting your hard drive will not completely get rid of all the previous information. There are several programs out that (not free) that work well. The one we like to use at work is BCWipe (www.bcwipe.com) That will get rid of all the files permanently and then reformat afterwards and you should be good. If you just erase all the files with BCWipe and then reformat using the WinXp CD during the re-installation, you should be good.

You need a boot floppy or CD. You can use format or fdisk commands.

Check out this site for boot disks. The Windows 98 SE boot disk should work fine.

If you are planning on installing an operating system on the drive, the setup process usually includes a format and/or partition section and it will accomplish the same thing.
